The survey results show that 68% of agencies have hired interns, mostly unpaid or with minimal pay. 79% work with cities, 83% are urban organizations, and 62.5% offer internships for 3-6 months. Pay for interns is available in 26% of cases, usually for graduate students. Academic levels vary, with 37% hiring undergraduates, 44.44% MPA students, and 18.52% other graduate degrees.

We would hire for longer terms if intern available. Hours are determined by the University to gain credit. Not sure.

Planning, Engineering, Business, Marketing - would be interested to know what else might be available. Any related degree.

Question 8 - Provide an explanation of job responsibilities that would be available for an intern in your organization The job responsibilities would involve policy research and drafting proposed policies. We currently sponsor university fellowships for students from AU MPA. Various Follow up call, analyze accounts for possible audit Administration/Clerical Administrative Communications coordinator and researcher Assisting the City Engineer Problem solving, public relations, social media outreach, staff support, media assistance General office work, meeting public, answering phone, taking job applications, assisting surveyor, light accounting Special Projects, shadowing Clerical and research Administrative skill development, decision making with leadership team, technology related projects

Not certain. Our current HR Director started as an Intern. No, but this could be a consideration under the right circumstances.

Several key staff and department heads began in our city as a college intern. Performance and skills excelled in each case.

  14. SO? WHAT IF I WANT TO HOST AN INTERN?

  15. Internship Duties The following should be considered in setting up an internship opportunity in your local government. 1. 2. 3. Assign the intern specific projects. Allow the intern to shadow the administrator/manager. Rotate the intern in the various departments of the local government. Allow the intern to attend council/commission meetings to observe the relationship between the governing body and the administrator/manager. Have the intern attend other board/committee meetings of the local government. Allow time for feedback between the intern and the administrator/manager. 4. 5. 6.

  16. Time Frame and Compensation Time Frame Internships usually last 8-10 weeks for summer and 14-15 weeks for fall and spring. Compensation Some interns are compensated, others are not. That is up to each local government. Most of the students are looking for experience and a mentor to assist them in launching their local government management career. All interns usually receive course credit towards their MPA degree by completing an internship.

Assist City Planner with Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) and Villages Design Review Committee (VDRC) applications, field surveys and agenda packets. Complete Executive Summary for Annual Report. Shadow City Manager, conduct research and other duties as assigned.
