  1. A little trickier - using the skill in a more complex sentence Tricky! Using the skill in a complex sentence, with other skills GDS Short Narrative - Beginning The next 3 lessons are going to help you to write a short narrative based on the story La Luna . I have provided an example of a short narrative that you will use to help you write yours. Lesson 1 - Writing the beginning of a short narrative (Setting the scene and introducing characters) Skills used in a short narrative: Language techniques (simple sentences, imagery, personification) Descriptive language (expanded noun phrases) Complex sentences - - Please watch short video of La Luna - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbuq7w3ZDUQ

  2. Example of a Short Narrative As the sun rose in the now azure sky, a misty haze began to form under the canopy of swaying, rugged trees. Curling around thick spiraling branches were constricting vines, which braced and creaked. Two brave explorers strode through the seemingly endless jungle, sweat running into their eyes. Dangling down from the layer of moss, vast, bold leaves flickered like flames in the growing bluster of wind. Simon, the leader of the expedition, was a tall, muscular dark skinned man famous for finding hidden or lost artifacts. His dark, brown hair was tied back and his piercing green eyes constantly searched the jungle for danger. Originally from England, he had been raised in America by his parents Sam and Ella when they had moved there to find new employment. Simon s love of combat trousers and loose, cotton shirts was inspired by his father, a famous archaeologist who had worked in Egypt. As he grew older, Simon knew he would follow in his father s footsteps. This place they were walking through was truly special but for the wrong reasons. Because, in the chaos of the natural surroundings, (where vines choked vines and branches beat down branches) he could feel the eyes of the forest fixed upon him! On top of this, there was a sense that something, good or bad, was going to happen very soon. Through a small gap in the flickering leaves, two dull, piercing eyes emerged followed by a gaping mouth full of teeth that jutted out like yellow pegs of evil! Before Simon had time to spin and flee, the jungle floor gave way underneath his feet! As he landed onto the damp, saturated ground, he took a forward roll. Slowly he stood up and looked around him in the gloomy light. In the distance, through endless cobwebs, a soft glow caught his eye. Could it be gold? Slowly and carefully he set off, brushing aside the cobwebs sending spiders scuttling away. Soon he saw the object causing the gleam a golden skull! He carefully picked up the artifact and placed it in his leather bag. Back in the jungle Bert, Simon s friend wandered around calling his friend s name loudly. Where could he be? Simon carefully walked back along the dark tunnel excited with his find. As he walked closer to the pool of light caused by the hole on the jungle floor, he could hear his friend s calling. Down here! he shouted up at his friend. Suddenly the light dimmed as his friend s head blocked out the light. Hold onto the rope and I will pull you up, Bert called down. As Simon grabbed hold of the rope he heard the click, click of sharp claws and the deep rumble of a growl from behind him. Quickly Bert pulled strongly on the rope. With a frustrated growl and a swish of its black tail, the beast retreated back into the depths of the tunnel in which it belonged.

  3. Key features of a short narrative introduction Recap the skills we will be using: Descriptive language: Expanded noun phrases Pre-modifiers: words that come before the noun to change it s meaning (adjectives) Post-modifiers: phrases, clauses that come after the noun to change it s meaning (relative clauses, prepositional phrases) Paragraph 1: Describe the Setting. What will the mood or atmosphere be? How will you convey it? Language Techniques: Imagery Simile Personification, Simple sentences for effect Paragraph 2: Describe the characters. What are they like? Do they have a backstory? How can you convey their traits? Complex sentences: A sentence that contains a main clause and a subordinate clause.

  4. Beginning Paragraph 1 describing the setting. An eerie hazardous mood is being created Expanded noun phrase (pre-modifier: misty post- modifier: under the canopy...) As the sun rose in the now azure sky, a misty haze began to form under the canopy of swaying, rugged trees. Curling around thick spiraling branches were constricting vines, which braced and creaked. Two brave explorers strode through the seemingly endless jungle, sweat running into their eyes. Dangling down from the layer of moss, vast, bold leaves flickered like flames in the growing bluster of wind. Imagery Sensory details. Hearing: creaked Seeing: Jungle (vines, leaves) Feeling: Sweat Paragraph 2 describing the character. Back story/charact er traits Simon, the leader of the expedition, was a tall, muscular dark skinned man famous for finding hidden or lost artifacts. Simile Complex sentence Subordinate conjunction when indicates the beginning of the subordinate clause The comparison of two things Personification Human characteristics Bold leaves

  5. Expanded noun phrases Recap the skills we will be using: An expanded noun phrase provides more information to a noun. They may contain pre-modifiers (adjectives) words that come before the noun to change it s meaning or post-modifiers phrases or clauses that come after the noun to change it s meaning. Today we will look at prepositional phrases; and relative and subordinate clauses. Expanded noun phrases examples Adjectives Relative clauses Subordinate clauses Prepositional phrase Adjectives to describe other nouns in the sentence The gargantuan, bright moon sat perched above the boat. Moon is the main noun being described 2 adjectives (pre) + a prepositional phrase (post) Nonno had a white, wispy beard that reached well below his shoulders, where the tip veered off to the left. The beard is the main noun being described 2 adjectives (pre) + relative clause + subordinate clause (post) The petit, wooden boat, which was still able to hold the weight of its three occupants, sat in the middle of the calm, tranquil ocean. The boat is the main noun being described 2 adjectives (pre) + embedded relative clause + prepositional phrase with adjectives to describe the ocean

  6. Language Techniques Recap the skills we will be using: Using a variety of language techniques can help your narrative come to life. Here are three Examples you can try. Imagery Bambino could hear the sound of the waves fizzing against the boat as he slowly rocked in harmony. Verbs used to show the senses to create an image. This is try to show what can be heard and felt. Language Techniques Imagery Personification Simple sentences for effect Personification The moon gazed down upon them inviting the trio to come closer. Personification giving the moon human characteristics. Moons cannot really gaze or invite. SImple sentence for effect Although unable to see where the ladder ended, Bambino gazed upon it, listening to his father s encouragement. He began to climb. A simple sentence can be used effectively after some long descriptive sentence often to create tension. What comes before it is important.

  7. Complex Sentences Recap the skills we will be using: An complex sentence contains a main clause and a subordinate clause. As Bambino climbed the ladder, Nonno and papa encouraged him. The complex sentence begins with a subordinate clause While Papa and Nonno sat there with their arms crossed, Bambino, who was full of enthusiasm, pestered them to find out what they would do next. Begins with a subordinate clause. An embedded relative clause is in the main clause. Papa, despite presenting himself as very strong and brave, was in fact a very gentle soul. The subordinate clause is embedded in the main clause.

  8. Complex Sentences Recap the skills we will be using: Subordinate conjunctions indicate the beginning of the subordinate clause. Try to experiment with where they can go in the sentence.

  11. Both paragraphs in full Read to get ideas! Deep in the silence of night, the blanket of stars winked at Bambino, twinkling in his eyes as they drank in the beauty of the warm summer evening. A light breeze wafted through Bambino s hair, and he watched in awe his two heroes - his Father and Grandpa - making their preparations for their evening work, work that Bambino had not ever had the chance to be a part of: until now. Father, the more nimble of the two men, grasped ropes and a ladder of which he hauled easily into the small boat. His light eyes glimmering with excitement, as he pulled Bambino aboard; sitting between him and his father. Next to bambino, Grandpa pulled a cap from a satchel - one that matched both his and Bambino s Father - placing it gently on his fine, brown hair. Playfully, before making his first strokes with the oars in the calm water, his father reached across and adjusted Bambino s hat to match how he wore it. Bambino giggled with excitement. This was going to be a remarkable adventure.

  12. Planning and writing task document Complete the beginning of your short narrative on La Luna. The next two lessons we will focus on the middle and ending.
