He was born in New Zealand His mother died when he was only a toddler FRANK S EARLY LIFE When he was 16 he joined the New Zealand Shipping Company The first time he applied for the job he was declined because he was not tall enough! He went from New Zealand to London which would take at least 100 days by clipper which was what he sailed on

HOW FRANK JOINED THE IMPERIAL TRANS-ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION Frank had a dream that he was navigating a ship around icebergs down Burlington Street in London. When he awoke he went down to Burlington Street and coincidentally Ernest Shackleton had an office on that road and Frank saw a poster advertising the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. He immediately knocked on the door and applied for a job. Shackleton gave him the job of captain straight away.
WHAT DID FRANK DO ON THE EXPEDITION? Frank navigated the Endurance through the pack ice, occasionally having to ram the sheets of ice Shackleton thought Frank was much better at following orders than giving orders He was the captain and navigator of the life boat the Dudley Docker which they successfully sailed to Elephant Island with some minor issues On the last night of sailing the Dudley Docker, Frank sailed all through the night and in the morning he fell into a deep sleep and the only way he was woken up was by kicks to the head! Frank, Harry McNish and sailors John Vincent, Timothy McCarthy and Tom Crean accompanied Shackleton on the James Caird to South Georgia Island Frank only had a few chances to use the sun to find their position, and once he had to spin around the mast of the James Caird to get their position At some points the crew had to scrape off ice from the deck of the boat for one minute each It took them 16 days, or two weeks and two days, to reach South Georgia The whole crew were eventually rescued by Shackleton, Frank and the rest of the crew of the James Caird Frank when he arrived home he was awarded the Polar Medal awarded to people who have been on Antarctic expeditions
