Here are the answers I would give the questions set. I have written my answer in blue and my explanation of how I know think this is in green. 1. When and where is the story set? The story is set in London, November 1922. I know this from the first page, where it says Part One . 2. Find evidence that the family don t have much money. Some evidence that suggests that the family do not have much money is that they had bread and dripping, Lilian was always hungry quickly, her mum cut hair with dressmaking scissors and they didn t have their own toilet. Some of this is due to the time in history too. Bread and dripping was popular at this time among poor families because dripping was produced when meat was cooked, and the families wouldn t have wasted anything. This information is throughout the chapter. 3. What job does dad do? Dad sells carpets by going to people s houses. Page 3. 4. How has the war affected London? The war had affected London by causing there to be men who had previously been soldiers, now injured and begging on street corners. Page 4. 5. Whose feet were discovered? The feet of Professor Selim Hanawati were found, who was a scholar of Middle Eastern art. Page 5.
6. Why is Grandad not taken with Howard Carter? Grandad does not like Howard Carted because he thinks that he is a glory boy because he d only been successful because of someone else s money. Page 6. 7. Does Lilian enjoy school? How do you know? Lilian does not enjoy school because on the first page she said she was dreading it and later in the chapter she says that she hated the place. She doesn t like her current school because everyone is so proper and snooty, but she preferred going to her old school. Page 1 and pages 6 and 7. 8. Which of Lilian s lessons at school would not be taught in many primary schools now? Lilian had a lesson in Latin, which is not taught in many primary schools now. Page 6. 9. What is Grandad s cat called? Grandad s cat is called Nefertiti. She is named after an Egyptian queen. Page 6 and later in the chapter. 10. Predict what will be in the package. There is no right answer here, but it would be sensible to predict that the package might contain something related to Egypt, or art. Probably not an iPad .
