Algeria's National Meteorology Office conducts ozone monitoring at GAW stations in Tamanrasset City and Assekrem. Calibration and data reporting are done regularly to WOUDC. In Burkina Faso, NAMA-BF oversees meteorological observations and is acquiring instruments for ozone monitoring. Collaboration with WMO, AEMET, and others enhances research and forecasting capabilities.

Tamanrasset City: Total Column O3 (TCO) [Dobson #11 spectrophotometer ], O3 OpticalTthickness (AOD) [Brewer #201 (Mk III)], solar and atmospheric radiations [Photometer]. Assekrem: Surface O3 (tropospheric O3) [O3 Analyzer TEI 49C ],CO and GHGs.. CALIBRATION: internal calibration and regional campaigns organized every 4 to 6 years by WMO for adjustments DATA REPOPRTING: All ozone data are monthly submitted to the World Ozone and Ultra violet Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC) in Toronto, Canada. NETWORK: Iberonesia network managed within the Izana Atmospheric Research Center of the State Meteorology of Spain (AEMET) THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: Ozone and related research are conducted sporadically at few academic institutions and at the Meteorological Institute of Oran. COLLABORATION, TWINNING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: WMO (Switzerland), AEMET (Spain), WOUDC (Canada), NASA (usa), EMPA (Switzeland), national academic institutions (universities: Tamanrasset, Oran, Blida) and Meteorological Institute of Oran.   4. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Burkina Faso OBSERVATIONAL ANS MONITORINGACTIVITIES: TheNational Meteorological Agency of Burkina Faso (NAMA-BF) oversee all atmospheric observations. Due to lack of instruments, Burkina Faso does not perform any measurement of Total Column O3 (TCO) or vertical profile of O3 or UV radiations. For scientific interest, observation of ozone concentration in the stratosphere are done, using the EUMETCast and Satellite Channel 8 (Meteosat 8). . The country received recently an approval of a project to acquire, through the Vienna Convention Trust Fund for Research and Systematic Observations, a ground-based TCO instrument (Dobson).. IMDS sensor (measuring PMx concentration) which measures PM10 particles and weather parameters acquired from AEMET (Spain) is installed at Ouagadougou station. CALIBRATION: regularly done for only meteorological instruments at NAMA-BF. DATA REPOPTING: no reporting is done as far no measurement is done. NETWORK: since there neither Dobson, nor Brewer spectrophotometers nor UV analyser, the country does not belong to any network.. THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: No scientific paper on ozone yet A High-Performance Computing System (HPCS) acquired by NAMA-BF runs WRF and ICON models for weather and climate forecasting. The HPCS runs as well a dust model received from the Simulation Center of Barcelona (Spain) for Ouagadougou.. DATA REPOPTING: no reporting is done as far no measurement is done. NETWORK: since there is neither Dobson, nor Brewer spectrophotometers nor UV analyser, the country does not belong to any network.. THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: No research on ozone or related substances and therefore no scientific paper produced.. COLLABORATION, TWINNING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: The Centre de Recherche en sciences math matiques et physiques (CRMP) is in collaboration with the Office Burundais pour la Protection de l Environnement (OBPE). Since 2018, the CRMP Is in close collaboration with the Royal Institute of Meteorology of Brussels (IRM, Belgium) for the installation of an ozone sonde station in Bujumbura... NEEDS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS: i) the country has submitted to the Ozone Secretariat a project requesting to be funded for a new station equipped with a Pandora spectrophotometer for measuring atmospheric composition ii) funding research on the protection of the ozone layer and related activities. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Comoros OBSERVATIONAL AND MONITORINGACTIVITIES: conducted by the National Agency of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACM) in collaboration with Comoros Ozone Office located in the Ministry of Environment.. Since 2023, Maroni station uses a spectrometer of the for measuring TCO and NO2 both at sunrise and sunset on a daily basis. The Syst me d'Analyse par Observations Z nithales (SAOZ) SAOZ was funded by the the VCTF and WMO. The station has a UV: Smart Ultraviolet (SUV) Radiometer measuring global UV irradiance in the different UV bands. A SkyCam vision is used for Cloud nebulosity measurements... CALIBRATION: the country wishes to participate in inter-comparison campaign for calibration of the SAOZ instrument. DATA REPOPTING:. NETWORK Maroni station is part of the the global SAOZ network. .. THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: The country report indicates detailed results from research and a paper published in international journal on Monitoring solar radiation UV Exposure in the Comoros. COLLABORATION, TWINNING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: Active research collaboration between scientists from ANACM and those of the Laboratory of Atmosphere and Cyclone (LACy) of Reunion University. NEEDS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS: the country has a plan to create an ozone observatory for developing observation and research on ozone, NO2, aerosol and ozone precursor particles such as CO, VOC and ODS. Cairo is the Regional Ozone Center (ROC) for ozone stations in North Africa and the Middle Eas. Ozone and UV solar radiation experts perform all the observations and data processing. Both Dobson and Brewer Spectrophotometers (Umkehr method) are used to measure the ozone vertical profile at various. data are stored in the ozone database at EMA. Surface ozone measurements are conducted in Cairo station, and outside urban regions. Details are in the country report. Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) measurements at various sites. UV solar radiation at different stations representing different regions in Egypt The general information of Egyptian network for monitoring the UV and UVB radiation is in the country report.. CALIBRATION: details on calibration of instruments is in section 1.5 of the country report. DATA REPOPTING: Ozone data are regularly submitted to the World Ozone and Ultra violet Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC) in Toronto, Canada. Surface ozone data are transmitted to the World Data Center of Reactive Gases (WDCRG) in Norway.. NETWORK;.. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Mauritania OBSERVATIONAL ANS MONITORINGACTIVITIES: the National Ozone Officer, Department of Environmental Assessment and Control in the Ministry of the Environment conducts activities related to ozone monitoring. Mauritania does not yet conduct any atmospheric measurement or monitoring of ozone or substances controlled by the Montreal Protocol. The National Meteorological Office (NMO) based in Nouakchott has an observation station with instruments measuring standard weather parameters (temperatures, pressure, humidity, winds), and an instrument measuring sand particulates (PM 10). Additional sensors can be connected to measure aerosols and greenhouse gases. In addition, satellite data received at with specific channels dedicated to monitoring CO2 and Ozone can be used in research. All these are potential to support collaborative research activities with the University of Nouakchott CALIBRATION: only for existing instruments at the station of Nouakchott. NEEDS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS: for Mauritania, this is the first participation in the meeting of ozone research managers. The country intends to: i) learn from other countries, particularly in its sub- region, on what is being done in terms of observations and monitoring the ozone layer,; ii) exchange more widely with fellow researchers, to examine avenues of collaboration; iii) identify, if possible, partnership actions that can be carried out in order to participate in the global effort to protect the ozone layer.   11. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Nigeria OBSERVATIONAL ANS MONITORINGACTIVITIES: the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (MIMET). Two GAW stations: Lagos and Oshogbo. Since 1993, measurements of total column ozone (TCO) with Dobson spectrophotometer #5703 (Shimatzu type). Data are archived in the database of the NIMET. Since the last 11-ORM report and today, the two stations are out of service. The 11-ORM report mentioned lack of Observer/Operator. Some campaign measurements: i. Throughout 2018, NIMET operated a monitoring station in the centre of Abuja: PM10, CO, NOx, and SO2. O3 monitored with a 2B Technologies Model 202 Ozone Monitor supplied by Air Monitors (UK); ii. Within 2019 2021, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NSTDA): ozone concentrations over three locations, Abuja, Anyigba and Kano using an Ozone monitor 2B Technologies model 201.. UVB and solar radiation are measured at several locations in addition to the GAW stations. UV is measured with silicon photodiode sensor. CALIBRATION: Nigeria takes part in the different WMO workshops/trainings for the Dobson instruments calibration. The 2B Technologies Model 202 Ozone Monitor was maintained and calibrated by NIMET according to the manufacturer s instructions. DATA REPOPTING:. Ozone data are regularly submitted to the World Ozone and Ultra violet Radiation Data Centre (WOUDC) in Toronto, Canada. NETWOTK: part of Dobson #5703 the Dobson global network. Researches on ozone monitoring are conducted by the MIMET), the National Space Research & Development Agency (NSRD) and universities and research institutions.. Very limited recent scientific publications (on UV health effect and on TCO). The report shows publications from a decade ago. COLLABORATION, TWINNING AND CAPACITY BUILDING: WMO; Relevant government agencies and stakeholders in the implementation of the Protocol. Presently; National Space Research and Development Agency for organizing annual National Air quality workshops that provide for effective deliberations among stakeholders and capacity building; Universities and research institutions. .NEEDS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS: Needs and recommendations: i) instruments for ozone profile measurement and for expansion of existing UV-B and solar radiation monitoring network; ii) participation in regular workshop/seminars/trainings for calibration of instruments to ensure high quality data for research and other purposes; iii) capacity building of technicians and scientists for enhancing professional competence in monitoring, data processing and research. Future plans: i) proposal for acquisition of reference stations submitted in response to the call for project proposals for possible support under the Trust Fund; ii) development of a network of stations for ground measurements of TCO and UV-B radiation; iii) enhancing the collaboration with local and international organizations on ozone and related issues; iv) capacity building. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Rwanda OBSERVATIONAL ANS MONITORING ACTIVITIES: atmospheric observations are conducted in the following three places: i) Rwanda Climate Observatory (RCO) under the Rwanda Space Agency (RSA); ii) Air Quality and Climate Change Monitoring Project (AQCCMP) under the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) and iii) Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) for Weather forecast. Due to lack of the appropriate equipment, Rwanda does not conduct any total column ozone (TCO) or UV measurements. Measurements conducted at the RCO Mount Mugogo GHGs (CO2, CH4, H2O), pparticulate matter (PM2.5), aerosol particles, ozone depleting substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol substances (with a Medusa instrument put recently in operation thanks to MIT and Scripps . At the rooftop of Science laboratories UR/CST (Kigali): Black carbon, volatile organics, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and chloride. Measurements conducted by AQCCMP : 21 Real-time Affordable Multi-Pollutant (RAMP) air quality sensors deployed over the country. Meteo Rwanda: several automatic and manual weather stations distributed over the country (solar radiation, temperature, pressure, humidity, rainfall and wind).. CALIBRATION: RCO: Scripps (California, USA). Data validation, interpretation and analysis during regular AGAGE meeting.   14. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Rwanda ... DATA REPOPTING:.. Data collected at the Rwanda Climate Observatory are to be reported within the AGAGE Network. NETWORK: AGAGE Network. THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: Currently, there are no major publications on ozone status due to lack of adequate ozone observation from ozone or UV measurement instruments. However, with the upcoming operationalization of Medusa, there is hope that a good number of publications will rise in the upcoming days. Several research conductedso far in Rwanda are on climate modeling, climate change, greenhouse gases and air pollution. Some samples are given in the country report. COUNTRY REPORTS REGION-1 , AFRICA Uganda OBSERVATIONAL ANS MONITORINGACTIVITIES: Key institutions undertaking monitoring of GHGs and O3 are the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Uganda does not yet conduct any measurement or monitoring of ozone. Measurements of GHGs (CO2, CH4) with EM27/SUN Series spectrometer. No direct measurement and monitoring of UV radiations due to lack of instruments. But, measurements of sunshine give an indirect indication of radiation exposures. CALIBRATION:. Last calibration was in 2005. No further activities carried out due to limited financial support. The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) for the atmospheric barometers and air thermometers conducts third party calibration services.. .DATA REPOPTING:.N/A THEORY, MODELLING, AND OTHER OZONE RELATED RESEARCH: No such activity is carried out in Uganda due to lack of funds, equipment and technical capacity..
