Longitude plays a crucial role in determining location on the Earth's surface, helping sailors and navigators pinpoint their positions accurately. It involves the angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian located in Greenwich, England. By using precise timekeeping and astronomical observations, longitude can be calculated, aiding in safe and efficient navigation across the seas. Understanding longitude is essential for mastering the art of navigation and exploration.

  1. Longitude 30 September 2021

  2. Do Now 1. What is the zero line for latitude? 2. What is the zero line for longitude? 3. What is needed to find longitude? Equator Prime Meridian Clock

  3. Sextant

  4. The altitude of Polaris is your latitude The angle of Polaris above the horizon is your latitude

  5. A Berthoud design watch 1770s

  6. Longitude is passed on a difference in time. It requires you to know what time an event occurs in two different locations. The earth rotates 360oin one day. The earth rotates at 15o/hour By multiplying the time difference by 15o/hour I can calculate the longitude between two points It requires large lists of astronomical events (sun rise, sun set, stars rising and setting)

  7. The different in solar time gives the longitude 15o/hr

  8. Longitude Longitude is the angular distance east or west of the Prime Meridian Prime Meridian is located in Greenwich, England. Why? Golden Rule (Those who have the gold, make the rules.) Largest Navy, largest merchant fleet The maximum a longitude can be is 180o, the (more or less) international date line. Meridians are imaginary semicircles on the earth s surface

  9. Longitude and Time Zones 1 Oct 2021

  10. Measuring Longitude Longitude is determined using a very accurate clock which keeps time at the Prime Merdian and the solar time at any other meridian Since the sun moves 15oper hour a local time earlier than GMT is east and a local time later than GMT is west If it is 12:00 noon where you live and it is 5:00 PM in Greenwich, what is your longitude? 5 X 15o= 75oW Longitude must include east or west

  11. Do Now 1. Does clock time match solar time? 2. Who originated time zones? 3. What is centner? No Railroads old unit of weight equal to about 110 pounds

  12. 19th century challenges American railroads maintained many different time zones during the late 1800s. Each train station set its own clock making it difficult to coordinate train schedules and confusing passengers. Time calculation became a serious problem for people travelling by train (sometimes hundreds of miles in a day), according to the Library of Congress. Every city in the United States used a different time standard so there were more than 300 local sun times to choose from. Railroad managers tried to address the problem by establishing 100 railroad time zones, but this was only a partial solution to the problem. Operators of the new railroad lines needed a new time plan that would offer a uniform train schedule for departures and arrivals. Four standard time zones for the continental United States were introduced on November 18, 1883. Britain, which already adopted its own standard time system for England, Scotland, and Wales, helped gather international consensus for global time zones in 1884.

  13. Time Zones Since the earth rotates in 24 hours there are 24 time zones (Official, more or less) Each time zone is roughly 15oacross Currently 38 Different Local Times in Use
