  2. Head of Department welcome Our principles: Academic Rigour. Reliability. A Growth Mindset . What makes a good historian? Good and bad reasons for picking, or not picking, history. More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self

  3. Meet the history department Mr. Popplewell Particular historical passions: the Renaissance, political history, and revolutions. Currently teaching: Civil Rights in the USA: 1865-1992 (Year 12) and Coursework (Year 13). Ms. Heard Particular historical passions: Russian history (especially the Tsars) and the First World War. Currently teaching: Coursework (Year 13). Ms. Butler Particular historical passions: modern German and American history, with a side love for Elizabeth I. Currently teaching: Democracy and Dictatorship in Germany: 1919-1963 (Year 12). Ms. Darby Particular historical passions: British Early Modern history, writing like a historian (Ms. Darby is also an English teacher, but we all know that history is the best). Currently teaching: The Early Stuarts: 1603-1660 (Year 13). More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self

  4. What you can expect in your history lessons A range of teaching activities. Some of the more common include: Guided reading. Essay planning. Mini lectures. Timelining and living graphs .   5. What you will study in history: In 2020-2021 we are studying the following OCR papers: Paper 1: The Early Stuarts: 1603-1660 (Year 13). James I and Charles I their reigns, problems, and successes / failures. The English Civil War(s), Oliver Cromwell, and the Protectorate. Paper 2: Democracy and Dictatorship in Germany: 1919-1963 (Year 12). Weimar Germany: its origins, turbulent origins, Golden Years, and (inevitable??) demise. Nazi Germany and WW2: the establishment and maintenance of a Totalitarian state. Cold War Germany: a divided country and the divergent paths of East and West. Paper 3: Civil Rights in the USA: 1865-1992 (Year 12). What most impacted the developments of rights for: African Americans, women, Native Americans, and workers? Rights are generally broken down into political, economic, social, and sometimes cultural. Coursework (Year 13). There is a degree of choice in picking your coursework title, but most students chose to write on Germany. More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self

  7. Extra-curricular opportunities in history Trips Holocaust education and ambassadorship. Essay competitions (great for university applications). University masterclasses and seminars. Coursework research libraries, archival access, and museums. More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self

  8. Where can history take you? A facilitating subject for universities. Careers: Anything to do with writing journalism, TV and movie industry, author. Law and related fields. Management, recruitment, and consulting. Historical consultants. Teaching! Skills research, writing, and forming an argument. More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self

  9. What we expect from you History is a challenging and rigorous A Level. We expect you to rise to this challenge, not avoid it. If you do so, you will do well - at Nishkam, history has a track record of excellence. This involves: Excellent attendance and punctuality. A preparedness to struggle at times, and then put in the effort to improve. The accountability to seek out out your own opportunities to improve. Reading around the subject (yes, everyone says this no, you cannot get the highest grades without it). History at Nishkam involves the study of a range of times and types of history. Not all of it will be your favourite, but we expect you to put in the diligence to master that which you are unsure of, and the passion to excel in your favourite areas.   10. Student perceptions (from real Y13 students, I promise) In history A Level the teachers treat you like adults. This is great, but it does mean you have to take responsibility . The history teachers want us to do well, and believe in us. They won t do anything for you, but they make sure you can do it really well yourself . You have to work hard, but it s worth it . History at Nishkam is both vigorous and challenging, but the teachers support makes it both interesting and rewarding . Every lesson is really a chance to learn more and improve your skills .   11. Qualification details One A Level in History, from the exam board OCR. We do not take the AS exam. More than Academic Excellence | More than a School | More than Self
