SUBJECT AREAS TAUGHT Medieval, Early Modern and Modern Irish, European & American with a Global Reach Women s Studies, History of Ideas, Political History, Cultural History, Local History
MODULE TYPES LECTURE MODULES: 5 ECTS SEMINARS & COLLOQUIA: 10 ECTS
LECTURE MODULES 5 ECTS Large group lecture format Two one-hour lectures per week plus 5-6 tutorials [= discussion groups] over the semester This year caps have been placed on visiting student registration in several of modules
ASSESSMENT OF LECTURE MODULES [5 ECTS] For Visiting Students, all History modules are continuous assessment Normally a mid-term essay or coursework (1/3) and a final essay (2/3) Some lecturers use other assessment methods Lecturers will inform students of their marking scheme at the start of the semester
SEMINARS & COLLOQUIA 10 ECTS Small group teaching w/ limited numbers Only advised for students doing History or Humanities in their home Uni. Numbers limited to 2 or 3 places per Colloquium or Seminar Note special registration procedures [below]
ASSESSMENT OF COLLOQUIA & SEMINARS Carry double weighting (10 ECTS) Mandatory attendance requirement Oral participation in discussions Presentation to class + other coursework Extended primary-source-based research essay: Colloquium: 3,000-4,000 words; Seminar: 4,000-6,000 words
MODULE DESCRIPTIONS Are in 2nd & Final Year Handbooks: follow links for BA (Joint Honours) on History website: www.nuigalway.ie/history/ Lecturers provide a syllabus at the start of teaching Keep a copy of the syllabus if you need it for approval in your home institution
TIMETABLES & VENUES Follow links to Visiting Students Information Sheet on History Website www.nuigalway.ie/history/ LECTURE MODULES: Two 1-hr lectures per wk + 5-6 tutorials (discussion groups) over the semester (each lecturer organises tutorial times, rooms & sign up ) COLLOQUIA: One 1-hr lecture per week (usually Tues. 5-6 [or Wed. 5-6]) + One 1-hr tutorial/discussion hour (Wed. or Thurs.) SEMINARS: One 2-hr session per week (usually Tues. 9-11; occasionally Thurs. 4-6)
MODULE REGISTRATION No approval needed for Lecture Modules Lecture module registration is on-line Approval from module convenor needed to register for a Colloquium or Seminar: e-mail them in advance for approval; include student no. & degree program Colloquia & Seminar registration: done by History Administrator after convenor s OK There is no audit registration in NUIG.
