Aiken County School District Historical Enrollment Trends Aiken County enrollment typically remains fairly consistent year over year. During the 2020/2021 school year, enrollment dipped 3.8% largely a result of an 8.2% decline in kindergarten enrollment as some families elected to defer enrollment due to the pandemic and others sought alternatives to the District s hybrid instructional approach or the full-time Aiken County virtual option. Traditional enrollment levels have returned over the last two academic years.
Demographic Trends Over the last several years, the Hispanic/Latino student population has grown about 18%. Those reporting two or more races has grown about 35%, while the caucasian population has declined approximately 8%.
Pupils in Poverty Aiken County has a higher percentage of students in poverty as compared to the state as a whole. Our benchmark districts are chosen from among the districts in the state with the most similar geographic area, number of students and demographic composition. Among the 3 benchmark systems which include Beaufort, Berkeley and Horry Counties, Horry most closely mirrors our District.
Readiness Levels of Students Entering Kindergarten in Aiken County Schools Students entering Aiken County Kindergarten classes typically have lower readiness for kindergarten compared to those throughout the state. Those that participate in an Aiken County Pre-K program have higher levels of readiness.
Multi Lingual Learner Population The multi-lingual learner population continues to grow in Aiken County Public Schools. During the 2018/19 school year, the Board of Education supported the addition of four full-time ESOL teachers bringing the number of instructional allocations to dedicated helping our ML students meet their language proficiency targets to 21 teachers.
