  3. Director of Athletics & Activities: Chris Langevin (clangevin@huusd.org) The Harwood Athletic Department strives to provide an athletic program of excellence for all its students. We believe in education based athletics, where the sports are an extension of the classroom. Providing an avenue to learn life lessons and values that are important in any educational program to create effective, engaged citizens. #1 THING THAT KIDS WANT FROM THEIR PARENTS MODEL APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR EVERY participant of a game can play ONE of four roles during a game: (1) PLAYER (3) COACH (2) SPECTATOR (4) OFFICIAL Whatever you do, do it well be GREAT in ONE area!

  4. Participation Paperwork Signed Up / Physicals If they are NOT signed up, they can NOT practice/participate/play. If we receive someone that comes into our office on Day 1 and is not signed up, they will have to watch from the sidelines. If they do not have a physical, they will not be participating. If we have nothing on file, we cannot risk having those students present. If you have a scheduled physical but it is after the expiration of your current physical OR after the start of sports your doctor can fax or email us a note saying something to this effect: Chris Langevin is cleared to participate in athletics with no restrictions until their upcoming physical, scheduled for September 17, 2022. Signed, Dr. _______.

  5. Attendance During the Season The expectation is that ALL student-athletes attend ALL academic classes, assigned study halls, ELOs, and TAs ON TIME in order to be eligible to participate in co-curricular activities. This will be reviewed on a daily and weekly basis. Student-athletes that show a pattern of tardiness or absences will lose their co-curricular privileges (including sitting out games or practices) NO student-athlete shall be excused from a disciplinary consequence for an athletic event (whether this be practice or game). The disciplinary consequence MUST be served prior to participation. If you receive a detention for leaving class for an extended period of time or skipping classes you must serve this detention instead of attending practice. If a student is suspended from school, he or she is NOT allowed to participate in any school activities while the suspension is in effect.

  6. Loyalty Clause Our coaches have a tremendous commitment to their respective program and Harwood Union HS. We expect the same from our athletes and the parents Per VPA rules, a member of a Harwood school team is a student athlete who is regularly present for, and actively participates in, all team tryouts, practices and competitions. Members of a school team are prevented from missing a high school practice or competition to compete with an out-of-school team/club, practice or competition (including tournaments, showcases, combines or other athletic events). Whenever a conflict arises between the high school team practice/competition and an out-of-school practice/competition on the same day, the high school team practice/competition MUST be honored by the student athlete. Priority must be given at ALL times to the high school team, its practices, and its contest unless a waiver has been granted by Athletic Director. Violation of the Policy 1st Violation: Report violation to VPA office, student-athlete is suspended from play for two games/contests (with the exception of football, skiing for which the suspension shall be one contest). 2nd Violation: Report violation to VPA office, student-athlete is removed from team for remainder of season.

  7. Student First, Athlete Second Proficiency Requirements: Student Athletes should complete all of their summative assessments. Learning Expectations and Course Scores must meet minimum requirements for your grade level Academic Status will be monitored Bi-Weekly If any of the above is not met, a Plan for Academic Recovery may be utilized. A recovery plan may use ELO, Study Halls, after-school support, or additional independent work at home. If you are put on a Plan for Academic Recovery (PAR), you can maintain your eligibility, as long as you continue to complete the work in your plan as outlined by your teacher. If you do NOT maintain the timeline as set by your teacher, you may be suspended for two weeks from co-curriculars.

  8. Substance Use The Harwood Union School Board of Directors is committed to a zero tolerance substance abuse policy. Any person, including adults who work at, use, or visit Harwood Union school facilities, shall not possess, use, sell, transmit, or be under the influence of any illegal drug, regulated substance, alcohol, or tobacco on school property or at any school sponsored student related activity away from school premises. Any student who participates in co-curricular activities shall not possess/use/sell or be under the influence of a substance at any time during the school year, 24 hours a day, seven (7) days a week, both when at school and school-related activities and when not at school and school related activities. For full expectations and consequences, click the link to the Harwood Student-Athlete Handbook and refer to Page 28.

  9. Transportation Transportation is available by the school for ALL levels and ALL teams.. Parents may ask the coach for permission for their son/daughter to ride home with them after an away contest. Riding with another player s parents after an away contest is allowed, only if a note is provided and approved by the coach. Forever Notes (One note in the beginning of the season covering all away contests is allowed) Student-Athletes are NOT allowed to drive themselves to an away contest. Only a parent may bring them if a conflict arises (educational, medical, family emergency)

  10. Harwood Sports Medicine The greatest myth: Athletic Trainers want me to sit out. If I tell my athletic trainer about an injury they ll pull me. What kinds of things do I tell my Athletic Trainer about? Collaborative Care [When do I need a doctor s note] How and why to avoid the ER for acute sprains/strains/concussions My job is to get you back to your previous level, or better, of sport as efficiently as possible . HELP ME, HELP YOU!

  12. Athletic Philosophies VARSITY TEAMS Winning does matter But there are many others ways to win than the scoreboard Sportsmanship #1 no matter what (modeling this for the community through athletics) NO guarantee of playing time or equal time SUB-VARSITY TEAMS Player development, skill development, and participation is the priority Playing time will be based upon work ethic and skill (not necessarily equal time however)

  13. Athletic Philosophies (cont.) MIDDLE SCHOOL TEAMS More than winning, the goal of middle school teams is to prepare participants for a higher level of competition Emphasizing individual skill development, sportsmanship, and a fundamental understanding of team play, strategies, and rules. Though coaches are not expected to guarantee a set amount of playing time in each competition, a fairly equitable amount of playing time under differing competitive situations should be expected. Attendance, proper behavior, a willingness to learn, and individual skill development are all factors in how much playing time a participant sees. Above all, we want all of our athletes to have a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

  14. Communication 24 HOUR Rule this refers to practices AND events Face-to-face / phone call / email Harwood Athletic Concerns Plan Harwood Communication Concerns Action Form The athlete should advocate for themselves First step, is for athlete to approach the coach to find a solution to the problem. IF the problem persists, Second step, the parent/guardian AND athlete should attempt to deal directly with the coach in order to find a solution to the problem. As a last resort the Director of Athletics & Activities should be approached to help find a solution to the problem. The coach, athlete, and parent/guardian will be involved in this meeting.

  15. Appropriate concerns to discuss with coaches: Communication From Coaches: The treatment of your child, mentally and physically. Ways to help your child improve. Concerns about your child s behavior. The coach s philosophy. Expectations the coach has for your child as well as all the players on the squad. Locations and times of all practices and contests. Team requirements, i.e., fees, special equipment, off-season conditioning. Disciplinary procedures that results in the denial of your child s participation. Issues not appropriate to discuss with coaches: 1. Playing time. 2. Team strategy. 3. Play calling. 4. Other student participants.

  16. Hazing, Bullying, Harassment Hazing, Bullying, or Harassment in ANY form is NOT allowed. Violations in this will result in game suspensions and/or dismissal from the team; as well as, any other consequences deemed appropriate by the administration. Please refer to the Student-Athlete Handbook for a more details description of these behaviors.

  17. Sportsmanship The goal of interscholastic athletics is to give young men and women the opportunity to expand their educational horizons by experiencing fair and friendly competition with peers. Ingrained in that competition is fairness, respect for rules, regulations, opponents and officials. Harwood subscribes to this goal and will strive in all co-curricular programs to achieve that objective. HARWOOD believes: The ideals of good sportsmanship, ethical behavior and integrity are the essence of interscholastic activities. The concept of "sportsmanship" must be taught, modeled, expected and reinforced by all those involved in competitive activities. That interscholastic activities provide an arena for participants to grow, excel, understand and value the teamwork. That good sportsmanship shall be defined as those qualities of behavior which are characterized by unselfishness and genuine concerns for others. That all administrators, coaches, athletes, officials, and spectators should demonstrate and promote good sportsmanship as a concrete measure of the understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity concepts of sportsmanship and

  18. Sportsmanship (Cont.) Last year, in response to incidents of harassment on the field and within teams in the State of Vermont, the Vermont Principals Association released a Google anonymously report incidents of concern from events. Form where people can Anonymously Report a Concern Of the incidents reported during the 2021-22 School Year: 60% of them were harassment towards female athletes 30% of them were harassment towards BIPOC athletes Most of the incidents occurred in the Fall Sports Season A majority of the incidents came from soccer games. The Highlanders motto: PURSUING VICTORY WITH HONOR!

  19. Role of Parents in Sports The National Federation of High Schools has come out with a new free course; Positive Sport Parenting . There is some good information, videos and handouts that parents and coaches should become familiar with. As a parent of a student who participates in athletics, you make a HUGE difference in the quality of your child s sport experience, as well as what is being taught and learned by our youth. The National Federation of State High School Associations has provided information and resources to help educate you on the importance of proper behavior by parents in school sports. **REMEMBER** EVERY participant of a game can play ONE of four roles during a game (1) PLAYER (3) COACH (2) SPECTATOR (4) OFFICIAL Whatever you do, do it well be GREAT in ONE area!

  20. Miscellaneous Items: The PE Credit system at Harwood is designed to reward the responsible and committed student athlete. At the start of the school year, once the PE department creates the Google Classroom, I will email the student-athlete s email addresses to sign up. At least 80% of practices and games during the season. Athletes may be denied this PE Credit if they fail to live up to the standards expected of athletes in our program. Must complete 2 seasons of athletics and a Google Classroom to receive your credit Please help us hold our student athletes accountable to our Code of Conduct and Student Handbook. We are all in this together for the education of the student athlete, and violations of either can lead to a loss of eligibility. As a co-curricular activity participant, you are a representative of your school and your program at all times. Behavior unbecoming, unlawful, or in violation of Harwood s co-curricular participation standards such as poor sportsmanship or improper behavior during school, practices, rehearsals, performances, games or in the community may result in immediate or future suspension from the activity or other consequences deemed appropriate by the coach/activity advisor or Director of Athletics & Activities.

  21. Miscellaneous (Cont.) Please take care of your uniforms. Wash properly and keep track of them. This is important to ensure we have good quality uniforms for future students. Take care of our facilities. There is no reason trash should be left all over the fields and sidelines. If you bring it to the game, please be sure to throw it away or take it with you. Streaming will be available for Harwood Hockey and Basketball via the NFHS Network (Basketball) or LiveBarn (Hockey). We will offer Season Passes for Basketball and Hockey ($75 family pass up to 4 people / $30 individual)
