The MSPE, a crucial component of residency applications, provides a standardized evaluation of a medical student's performance in school. It is not a letter of recommendation but rather a comprehensive account of the student's activities and progress while addressing academic or professionalism concerns. The document aims to present information clearly and concisely, emphasizing professionalism, academic history, progress, and noteworthy characteristics. The MSPE timeline includes meetings with OSA advisors for review and revisions before submission.

  1. Understanding the MSPE and your 1:1 OSA Meeting John Allen, MD

  2. What is the mspe

  3. The MSPE Required component of residency application Standardized document (AAMC MSPE Task Force Guidelines) Summative statement of evaluation in medical school (no surprises) Not a letter of recommendation, instead an accounting of time and activities during med school Serious academic difficulties or professionalism concerns must be addressed in the MSPE (no surprises) AOA and GHHS will be noted in your MSPE MSPE written by Dr. Thom, Dr. Allen, Dr. Lamos, Dr. Flaherty. MSPE writer assigned by specialty applying

  4. The MSPE Standardize, to extent possible, information in the MSPE across schools, and present it clearly, concisely. Include details on professionalism both deficient and exemplary performance. Limit Noteworthy Characteristics to three bulleted items that highlight an applicant's salient experiences and attributes. Locate comparative data in the body of the MSPE. Include information on how final grades and comparative data are derived (i.e., grading schemes). Provide school-wide comparisons if using the final adjective or overall rating and define terms used. Include six sections: Identifying Information, Noteworthy Characteristics, Academic History, Academic Progress, Summary, and Medical School Information. Please see the full MSPE Recommendations for more detailed guidance on content in each section.

  8. Questions about the mspe?

  9. Will the MSPE show our evaluations exactly like they appear on MedHub, or will it be a summary of the main points from each evaluation. Alternatively, say that there is a common theme from our rotations (ie: very empathetic student), will that be summarized in a cover letter or something of that effect?

  10. What if our sub-I is not included in the blocks included on the MSPE (up to and including block 2 of MS4)? Is that a problem? Should we have a sub-I during the blocks included on the MSPE? What if there are no spots available?

  11. How is the MSPE unique to a student, and can make a student stand out compared to their peers or other applicants? How is the MSPE utilized compared to Letters of Recommendations?
