Are intentional with their work.
Are organized in their study habits.
Are self-aware and self-sufficient.
Bring reading and writing skills to the courses.
Are reflective about their learning.
Are willing to negotiate with more challenging and
sophisticated work

What are the advantages of
enrolling in IB courses?

It is the richest, most challenging program of study available
to high school students.
It provides a curriculum that connects the disciplines;
learning is integrated, and critical thinking skills are
developed.
Students frequently earn college credit and advanced
placement status. Up to and sometimes over 30 college
credits starting college with Sophomore Standing!
Students are extremely well prepared for college work, both
the rigorous demands of the subjects and the time
management required.
Students participate in creative and service-oriented
activities.
Students reflect on growth academically and personally.
Students become more globally minded.

Completion of Algebra 1 is required and ideally Geometry
prior to coming into the program. If you have not, we
recommend Geometry over the summer between grades 8
and 9, and then continue in the math sequence.

The ideal situation is that students get as many years of
language as they can, and become as fluent as they can. That
could mean 4 or 5 years of a language.

This is what makes IB unique!

Grades 9 and 10: How are
Global Studies Honors classes
different from standard
classes?

GS Honors classes:
Assume skills and intellectual curiosity
Are faster paced
Include more sophisticated content and skills
Include more long-term as opposed to nightly homework
Incorporate an increased focus on abstract thinking
Include practice assessments that are vertically aligned to
their DP counter-part courses

F.A.Q.s

Do I get opportunities for electives?
Yes, you have elective spots each
year, but depending on your HarCo
requirements, 1 to 2 slots per year.

Can I switch out of an IB class if it is
too hard?
There is little room for
movement with increasing class
sizes. We encourage students to get
as much information before
selecting their courses.

Is there tons of homework?
I.B. is a
rigorous course of study these are
college courses in high school, so
there is required course-work to be
completed at home, but each student
handles it differently.

What if I am not good at Math or
Science? Can I still do well in IB?
Yes, IB looks at the student as a
whole learner and provides
opportunities for students with
certain course difficulties.

Is there tutoring offered?
 Yes, we
offer tutoring through NHHS as well
as a Buddy system, and CAS projects
centered around tutoring for exams.

Speaking of Exams… how often are
we tested and what is it like?
 The
true IB related exams in order to
earn the diploma do not take place
until your Junior and Senior years.
See next slide…

Assessments

IB Assessments are both Internal and External,
meaning they take official IB exams directed by their
teacher, and some they take at the end of the course or
within a course that are sent away to be graded by an
external examiner

Exams range from presentations, multiple choice,
essay, oral commentaries and discussions, projects

Exams are individual and at times collaborative

Registration Fees

In your student’s Junior year in order to be considered an IB student,
they must be registered and pay a one time registration fee. The current
Registration Fee is 172.00
This fee covers the cost of registering your student to their subjects
It covers data collection on that student’s results per subject
It covers data collection of that student’s results in relation to the
school and the world results for that subject
It covers printing and mailing of a Diploma and/or Course Certificate
It covers the sending of that student’s scores to 6 universities

Exam Fees

Currently the price of exams is
119.00 per subject
exam.
This fee covers the cost of registering students to a
particular exam
It covers the printing of that exam
It covers the mailing of that exam to the school and the
awarding of marks of that exam

BUT WAIT…

Cost Benefits

Students take a
minimum of 6
IB Courses in which
they test for exams (some test for as many as 9!).
6 courses x 119.0o per exam = 714.00
Plus the Registration Fee of 172.00 = 886.00
However, Harford County Public Schools have
agreed to pay for all of the exam fees for those
accepted into the IB program!
So for only 172.00, the price of Registration, your
student could potentially save THOUSANDS in
college costs of courses, or a whole year of college!

Explore the distinctions between the Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. While AP focuses on test success and college credit, IB offers a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing skills development and the IB Learner Profile. IB emphasizes depth over breadth, with multiple assessments and the opportunity to earn an additional diploma.
