3. David & Mephibosheth 2 Sam 9:1-13

4. David & Mephibosheth The story of David s dealings with Mephibosheth begins with the friendship of Jonathan and David (1 Sam 18:1-4)

5. And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. (1 Samuel 18:1 4 KJV)

7. David & Mephibosheth Background Saul sought David s life (1 Sam 18:4-9). Jonathan and David devised a plan to save David (1 Sam 20) Jonathan s loyalty and allegiance was to David and to what was right (1 Sam 23:14-18 Cf 1 Sam 19:4-6) The Philistines kill Jonathan and Saul and David mourns them (2 Sam 1:10-17)

8. David & Mephibosheth Background: David s mourning for Jonathan was mourning the loss of a true friend (2 Sam 1:25-27) Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan, David s beloved friend (2 Sam 4:4)

10. David & Mephibosheth Mephibosheth s Story Is A Lesson On Life Life can be unfair What did Mephibosheth do to deserve what happened to him (2 Sam 4:4) His name means dispeller of shame . What happened to him was the result of the actions of his grandfather, changing his life dramactically He was of royal lineage He lived in the House of Machir in Lo-Debar pasture-less (place of no bread).

12. David & Mephibosheth The Scriptures teach us that life is full of suffering and injustice while on this earth (J ob 14:1-2; Eccl 2:17,23).

13. Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. (Job 14:1 2 KJV)

14. For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity. There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 KJ V)

16. David & Mephibosheth Those who love God find strength and understanding through inequity We can learn of the compassion and mercy of the Lord (Jas 5:11) Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. (J ames 5:11 KJ V)

17. David & Mephibosheth Those who love God find strength and understanding through inequity We can learn obedience (Heb 5:9). And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; (Hebrews 5:9 KJV) The extent of God s love (1 Pet 2:18-21; Rom 5:5-9).

Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. David & Mephibosheth David s Treatment Of Mephibosheth Is A Lesson Of Thankfulness Davids had great reason to be thankful The Lord gave him rest from all his enemies (2 Sam 7:1) He gave David hope and promise (2 Sam 7:16) David continually expressed his thanksgiving to the Lord (Psa 118:24; 104:34)

21. This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter. I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:20 24 KJV) This Psalm corresponds to David capturing Jerusalem and it being made the capital (2 Sam 5:6-9)

22. The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever: the LORD shall rejoice in his works. He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke. I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. (Psalm 104:31 34 KJV) This Psalm corresponds to David giving instructions to his Solomon in building the temple of the Lord (1 Chr 28:11-21

23. David & Mephibosheth David s Treatment Of Mephibosheth Is A Lesson Of Thankfulness The thankful heart seeks opportunity to do good (2 Sam 9:1) And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan s sake? (2 Samuel 9:1 KJV) (Gal 6:10)...

24. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith. (Gal 6:10 KJV) As thou art able, while thou art able, and when thou art able. (Jemison, Faucet, and Brown).

25. David & Mephibosheth II. David s Treatment Of Mephibosheth Is A Lesson Of Thankfulness... C. Why did David seek out Mephibosheth and do good to him? D. 2 Sam 9:1 For Jonathan s Sake ! (2 Cor 4:11-12). For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death worketh in us, but life in you. (2 Corinthians 4:11 12 KJV) Our good must be for Christ Sake (Mk 9:38-42).

But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part. And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. (Mark 9:38 42 KJV)

27. David & Mephibosheth David s Dealing With Mephibosheth Is A Lesson Of Grace David found Mephibosheth and brought him into his house (2 Sam 9:5-13). Mephibosheth had done nothing to warrant this favor We have done nothing to deserve God s grace (Eph 2:8-10) God has forgiven us for Christ s sake *Eph 4:32; 1 Jn 2:12) Our forgiveness is also for the sake of our Lord (Col 3:13)

David & Mephibosheth One Final Lesson Mephibosheth s reaction to David is a lesson of how we should receive God s grace (2 Sam 9:6-8) (Lk 17:10) Ziba conspired to take away the inheritance from Mephibosheth (2 Sam 16:1-4). He lied to David regarding Mephibosheth. David believed Ziba for a time but Mephibosheth told him of Ziba deception. The response of Mephibosheth (2 Sam 19:24-30). What about us? (Matt 19:20-29).
