  6. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 3 V 2 Oakley Reserves Saturday, 10 September 2011 MC: Steven Finch, Robbie Watson, Nick Bracey Oakley: Jamie Smith, Dean Boyles Middleton s young reserve team continued their unbeaten start to the season with a hard fought victory over a well-organised and experienced Oakley side. Cheney had the better of the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead after 15 minutes when Steven Finch started and finished a well worked move down the right wing, getting in to the box to guide the ball low passed the keeper. Oakley struck back straight away and were level within 5 minutes and then proceeded to dominate the rest of the half, creating a number of chances but unable to convert them to press home their advantage. They came out of the blocks strongly again in the second half and were 2-1 up within 10 minutes of the re-start. With Oakley dominating the play, Cheney didn t look as if they would be able to get back in to the game, as they were getting possession but without causing the visitors defence any real problems. An enforced change due to an injury to one of the Oakley central defenders seemed to be the turning point, as Cheney got back in to the game and were level soon after as striker Robbie Watson fired a sweet left foot shot in to the corner of the net. Cheney secured the points minutes later when a corner from Watson went deep to the far side of the penalty area where Nick Bracey was waiting to fire an explosive half volley in to the far corner of the net, giving keeper Turnbull no chance.

  8. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 2 v 2 North Oxford Reserves Saturday, 17 September 2011 MC: Robbie Watson, Josh Hart NO: Nick Townsend, Luke Trotman Middleton s reserve team battled to hold on to their unbeaten start to the season with this hard-earned draw against North Oxford reserves. Cheney settled in to game quicker and took an early lead through Robbie Watson and proceeded to dominate the early part of the game. However North Oxford managed to get on top towards the end of the half but were unable to turn this domination in to goals. The second half was a different story, with the visitors playing the better football and being rewarded with an early equalizer. They continued to put the home side under pressure and looked certain to grab the winner, with the game being played mainly in the home team s half. However with about ten minutes left on the clock, a rare breakaway saw Watson in a one-on- one with the keeper, only to drag the ball agonizingly wide, and then Josh Hart coolly lobbed the advancing keeper from 30 yards to give the home side the lead. This was short-lived, as the visitors made the most of some slack defending to equalize again and ensure the points were shared in what was a good-spirited, well-fought game.

  12. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 1 v 3 Broughton & NN Reserves Saturday, 22 October 2011 MC: Taylor Burden B&NN: Jimmy Phillips, James Castle, Nathan Woods Cheney s unbeaten start to the season came to an end with the visit of table-topping Broughton & North Newington to Astrop Road. Both teams started strongly as they looked to dominate the early stages of the game, but it was the visitors who had the most of the possession as the half wore on, making the most of the wind at their backs. They took advantage of this by opening the scoring on the half hour as Jimmy Phillips struck a sweet shot in to the top corner of the net from 25 yards as the Cheney defence looked on. The home side came out stronger in the second half and dominated the early exchanges but despite this soon found themselves 2-0 down as keeper Chris Coles lost possession as he came to claim the ball on the edge of the box and James Castle calmly slotted in to an open net. Newington were 3-0 up soon after with Nathan Woods firing home a penalty after Stephen Finch had been harshly judged to have impeded a visiting attacker in the area. Taylor Burden netted a consolation goal for the home side as they pushed to get back in the game, but the visitors came out as worthy winners to maintain their top of the table position.

  14. Division 3 Enstone Reserves 3 V 1 Middleton Cheney Reserves Saturday, 29 October 2011 Enstone: Ghagan, Dean Blake, Clements MC: ????? Enstone returned to winning ways by overcoming a determined Middleton side at Cox s Lane The home side had the welcome return of goalkeeper and captain Chris Forde whose presence is not to be underestimated whilst for the visitors they too were captained and keeped by an Enstone legend in the name of Chris Coles. With wing wizard Ghagan on his game it come as no surprise when Enstone took the lead after 10 minutes via the route of a Middleton boot who was trying to block one of many crosses put in from Ghagan but only succeeded in diverting past the hapless Coles 1-0 Middleton put in a lot of effort and running but Enstone continued to make the clear openings and it come as no surprise when Dean Blake made it 2-0 sliding the ball past an onrushing Coles after being put through by Gary O Donovan. Another goal shortly followed and what a fine team goal it was involving Ghagan, Stevens and McCullum which finished when the latter fed Clements who coolly side footed into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to make the half-time score 3-0 to the home side. Cheney started the second half on the front foot and put the home side under immense pressure but were cumbersome to the counter attack as a result and Enstone should really have added to their tally but didn t CONTINUED

  15. Forde in the Enstone goal was untroubled but was finally beaten from close range after a melee in the area 3-1. A penalty was then harshly given against the Enstone defender Tibble but from the resulting award the ball was drilled against the upright. This would have made for a desperate final ten minutes of play had the opportunity not been passed on. Further drama followed shortly after when from an in swinging free-kick Forde instead of catching, punched the ball into the face of an onrushing Middleton attacker and it trickled into the Enstone net. However, the linesman had his flag up and the goal was disallowed for off-side which resulted in very heated protests from Cheney. Enstone saw out the remaining minutes and earned their first victory after four defeats putting a smile on the face of manager Chris Mullard. Special word of praise for the defensive pairing of Dan Tibble and Simon Palmer with the former putting in an immense dominating performance.

  17. Division 3 Horspath Reserves 0 V 1 Middleton Cheney Reserves Saturday, 05 November 2011 MC: Luke Finch With Horspaths recent form the team ran out this weekend thinking they could beat anyone, this week s Middleton Cheney would be a tougher opponent being higher up the league standing. From the off it was obvious the game would be an old school hard gritted battle, Cheney s attitude keen from the off. Horspath knew they were in a game and stepped up a gear, both team crunching into the challenges. In a game being played in the fashion it was it was always going to boil over, but it didn t ruin the game only added to the desire to get stuck in and win. After fifteen minutes Horspath thought they d make the break thru, a long diagonal ball finding Ben Beresford drifting in from the flank, his control on the chest taking behind the marker, the ball dropped and dispatched firmly into the top corner. The keeper could only watch as the ball cannoned from the underside of the crossbar, on the line, back against the cross bar and bouncing this time the other side of the line. The referee in no place to see consulted the Cheney linesman who it would be fair to say would never give a goal that was obvious to everyone else. The goal was not given and the game went on. At half time the score was a nill nill draw, it was apparent that a single goal could decide the game. On return to action both teams battled and pushed, both creating chances but a scoreless draw looked to be the outcome until Chenney slotted thru the striker who looked to be hacked down in the box at what looked like a stone wall penalty, not given. CONTINUED

  18. With ten minutes the deadlock was indeed broken thru Cheneys Luke Finch, his quick feet alluding two defenders before calmly slotting home. It was indeed the winning goal in a tough but fair game of football, Horspath feeling hard done by. But there s a silver lining to every cloud, let this be a lesson to Horspath the feeling of defeat is not nice, the feeling of success well ..is. Horspath cannot simply turn up, pull on the shirt and expect to win, it takes heart which they have but it also takes graft and a desire to be harder, faster and to the ball first.

  22. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 7 v 1 Charlton Reserves Saturday, 26 November 2011 MC: Josh Hart (3), Ryan Gascoigne, Wes Bailey, Luke Finch, Conor Deveraux Charlton: Chad Blakman Cheney maintained their early season form with a comfortable win over bottom of the table Charlton. Leading scorer Josh Hart gave the home side an early lead when he slotted home within the first five minutes but they failed to capitalize further on their superior possession until mid-way through the half when a speculative cross from full back Ryan Gascoigne deceived keeper Barry Reynolds and ended up in the net. A further goal from Hart, after some good work by fellow striker Conor Deveraux, gave Cheney a 3-0 half time lead. Middleton started the second half strongly, dominating the possession again and creating a number of good chances, but failing to take advantage and increase their lead. It took a substitution to create the opening, Wes Bailey working well with Hart down the left wing and coolly passing the return ball past a helpless Reynolds to make it 4-0. However, Charlton refused to lie down and came back strongly, taking advantage of some careless defending by the home side to grab a goal back from Chad Blakman. This seemed to stimulate Cheney in to action and two goals in as many minutes sealed the game in their favour, Josh Hart completing his hat trick and Luke Finch getting a goal as a reward for a strong performance in the middle of the park. Deveraux completed the scoring with a solo goal in the closing minutes to wrap up a solid victory for Middleton.

  24. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 0 Enstone Reserves 2 Saturday, 03 December 2011 Enstone: Alex Gardner, Chris Mullard Enstone completed the double over Middleton with a hard fought victory at Astrop Road. The home side had the best of the early exchanges and put pressure on the Enstone defence but failed to trouble keeper Chris Ford. The visitors had a number of counter attacks but similarly failed to test home keeper Chris Coles and the game was goalless at half time. The second half started with a bang as Enstone were in the lead within 30 seconds of the restart, as the Cheney defence failed to clear the opening attack and Alex Gardner fired an unstoppable shot from 25 yards. Cheney got back in to the game but their chances were dramatically reduced when central defender Matty Ward was given a straight red card for bringing down an Enstone striker when he was clear through on goal. Enstone s second goal from Chris Mullard with five minutes to go sealed the three points for the visitors.

  26. Division 3 Oakley Reserves 3 v 1 Middleton Cheney Reserves Saturday, 10 December 2011 Oakley : Phil Weller, Jamie Smith, Chris Staker Middleton Cheney: Conor Deveraux Oakley reserves got back to winning ways with a deserved home victory at the Durnabeu Stadium. Oakley took a first half lead from a Phil Weller penalty spot kick which was later equalised by Cheney with a strike from Conor Deveraux. Oakley regained the lead with a scrappy goal mouth scramble scuffed in from the Oakley Player manager Jamie Smith. Oakley s lead was doubled in the second half to go 3-1 up when Chris Staker s side foot lob beat the keeper from the edge of the 18 yard box. Cheney were thrown a lifeline later the game earning a penalty and a chance to reduce the deficit back to one goal. Oakley conceded the spot kick when Andy Parke wrestled a Cheney player to the ground following some handbags during the build-up to a corner kick. The player bundle multiplied as Cheney s number 7 Luke Finch piled into the ruck with fisticuffs forgetting the sport is football and not rugby. The justified red card followed and the big man was forced to march away from his team mates who were now pinning all their hopes on the spot kick. Up stepped a young Cheney player who looked a bundle of nerves to face the pumped up Oakley goal keeper - Chris Edge. The spot kick was well struck to the keepers right side but was met with a strong left arm parrying the ball up and over the cross bar. Oakley then went on to close out the game comfortably with the extra man advantage.

  28. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 3 v 0 Kennington Reserves Saturday, 17 December 2011 MC: Conor Deveraux (2), Josh Hart Cheney s young reserve team got back in to winning ways with this impressive victory over visiting Kennington. The game was played in bitingly cold conditions on a very sticky pitch and was interrupted by hail and snow, but both terms put on a very entertaining game of football despite this. The home side took the advantage after 10 minutes with Conor Deveraux slotting the ball home and the same player tapped in from close range mid way through the half to give Cheney a 2-0 lead going in to half time. Both sides came out in the second half playing good attacking football and it was the visitors who had most of the early pressure, forcing one excellent fingertip save from veteran keeper Chris Coles to keep his team in the game. But Middleton forced their way back in to the game and secured the points when Josh Hart fired home to give the home side a well-deserved victory.

  35. Division 3 Kennington Reserves 4 Middleton Cheney Reserves 0 Saturday, 28 January 2012 Ken: Josh Taylor (3), Stuart Dunham Kennington controlled the game from start to finish with their best performance of the season against the league leaders at the Playfield Road stadium. The Yellows took the lead after 15 mins with some nice play down the right side between Ben Smith and Ben Van Eitzen, who delivered a pin point cross for Alex Crossan to head home from 2 yards out only for him to close his eyes and miss the ball completey, luckily Josh Taylor held his nerve to side foot the ball home. the home side was constantly on the attack and captain marvel Stuart Dunham made it 2 0 with a stunning left foot strike from a tight angle which flew into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. Second half was the same as the first Kennington winning everything in midfield with Matty Hutton and Liam Buck controlling the tempo of the game. Josh Taylor got the third after Matty Hutton let fly with a 20 yard pile driver which struck the post and landed at Joshs feet who calmy slotted it in the net. Van Eitzen was unlucky to make it 4 after a mix up in the Cheneys defence where he lobbed the keeper but unfortuantely hit the cross bar. Stuart Dunham was rolling back the years with his silky skills and runs down the wings causing the Cheneys defence nightmares all game but the glory has to go to Josh who got the 4th and his third with a lovely volley from 15 yards to send the playfield road faithful home happy.

Broughton shaded the first half 3-2 but Middleton stormed back to open up a 6-3 advantage. Broughton tried to get back in the game in the last 10 minutes but despite managing one and creating several chances the final score was 4-6 in favour of Middleton. Although both defenses will want to forget this game, on the whole both teams deserve praise for their attitudes and played some great football in very difficult circumstances. The game was played throughout in a fair and competitive manner which must have given referee Reg Issac an enjoyable and stress free afternoon

The early exchanges produced some end to end football as both sides battled to get the upper hand but it was the home side who took the lead when leading scorer Josh Hart got on the end of a good passing move between Luke and Stephen Finch to slot the ball past visiting keeper Tidbury. Charlton got back in to the game but were unable to turn the advantage in to goals and the score remained 1-0 at half time. Cheney increased their advantage early in the second half with a goal from Liam Hart and then a Steve Twynham penalty made sure of the victory. Charlton got a late consolation with a disputed effort from Zak Blackman but by then the result was already secure

Ivor Gubbins Cup Round 2 Middleton Cheney Reserves 1 Yarnton Reserves 2 Saturday, 10 March 2012 MC: Scott Finch (pen) Yarnton: Tim Bottomley, Carl Heaven Cheney lost in the quarter final of the Ivor Gubbins Cup after a hard fought match against a strong and disciplined Yarnton side. The early part of the game produced some end to end football as both sides battled to get the upper hand, and just when it looked liked the half time break would come without a goal on the board, Cheney lost possession in the centre circle and the resulting move gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Yarnton were able to increase this lead early in the second half when loose marking from a corner enabled them to score with a far post header and Cheney looked out of it. However this only served to inspire them and they picked up the game and took it to Yarnton for the last half an hour and only some resolute defending and good goalkeeping from Dan Kavanagh kept the visitors ahead. A Scott Finch penalty reduced the arrears but the home side were unable to grab an equalizer and Yarnton move on to the semi-finals.

  44. Division 3 Charlton Reserves 1 Middleton Cheney Reserves 2 Saturday, 17 March 2012 Charlton: Zak Blakman MC: Josh Hart, Liam Hart Cheney took the lead early on after poor defending left Josh Hart with a free header. Charlton then should've scored when Jeff Hall had a chance but headed over the bar. Will Cooper had another great shot on the edge of the box but the away keeper pulled off a great save. The away side doubled their lead half way through the half after a strike by Liam Hart. Charlton defender Lee Griffin then gave a blatant penalty away. A goal here would've seen the game put beyond Charlton but Keeper James Tidbury produced a great save to his left to keep the score at 2-0. The home side went in at half time knowing they were still in the game after matching the oppsition for most of the first 45. Charlton were the better side in the second half and created numerous chances but to no avail, then disaster for the home team -Dean Hudson gave away his 3rd pen of the season and surely a score line of 3-0 would kill off any hopes the home side had of staging a dramatic comeback. Cheney changed spot kick takers but it made no difference as GK James Tidbury dived to his right this time and produced another fantastic save. Then drama as Charlton striker Zak Blackman scored almost straight after the save to give CUFC some hope - it was a fantastic chip over the keeper and it was the least Charlton deserved. Shots from Charltons Richie Knight, Zak Blakman, Jason Bubb and a header from sub Robbie Honour wasn't enough to grab an equaliser and the away team went away with all 3 points. F.T. 1-2

The home side made sure they got on top of the game early with Luke Finch opening the scoring in the first 30 seconds, and they then went on to create a number of good chances before top scorer Josh Hart notched the second mid way through the first half to leave the score at 2-0 at the interval. Horspath s chances of getting back in to the game were severely reduced when Tom Williams was sent off ten minutes in to the second half, but some sloppy play from Middleton and some excellent goalkeeping from visiting keeper Richard Brookes meant that the score remained the same until ten minutes from time when Finch grabbed his second and secured all three points for the home side.

Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 3 Oxford Irish Reserves 1 Saturday, 14 April 2012 MC: Adam Perryman, Harry Mitchell, Sean Dineen OI: (No scorer noted on sheet) Cheney continued their push for a promotion place with a hard fought victory against Oxford Irish. Both sides battled to gain the early advantage with some good football and tough tackling but the game remained goalless until Adam Perryman finished off a good team move from the home side mid-way through the first half. The visitors got straight back in to the game and were level within five minutes and continued to put the Cheney defence under pressure until the half time whistle blew but were unable to put the ball in the net. Middleton started the second half much stronger and dominated a lot of the possession and were rewarded when Harry Mitchell headed home a pin point cross from Tristan Salt. They should have secured the win soon after when Robbie Watson was brought down in the box but Salt hit the ball straight at keeper Kirton for an easy save. However the game was won with ten minutes remaining when Sean Dineen fired in after a good run down the right wing and the three points were secure.

  50. Division 3 Middleton Cheney Reserves 3 Hinksey Reserves 2 Saturday, 21 April 2012 MC: Josh Hart (3) Hinksey: David Fitzsimmons, Asha Townsend A second half hat-trick from Josh Hart was enough to secure victory against title winners Hinksey and ensure that Cheney finish in the runners-up spot, but they were made to fight all the way to the final whistle by the spirited visitors. With the Division Three title already in the bag, Hinksey knew that that Cheney had to do all of the work to get 3 points from the game to secure the runners up spot, and they made the most of this by settling in to an early rhythm of neat passing and keeping the ball which made the home side work hard to get in to the game. However they failed to create any meaningful chances and Cheney started to get some possession with Hart having a couple of good chances to open the scoring but finding keeper Martin Clark in good form. Scott Finch then had a goal disallowed for the home side and the teams went in to the break even at 0-0. The start of the second half was a different story with Middleton dominating the play and being rewarded with three goals from the hard-working Hart in a fifteen minute spell which put the home side firmly in control and well on target for the victory they required. But Hinksey refused to lay down and got one goal back when home keeper Chris Coles failed to hold a free kick from the edge of the area and David Fitzsimmons pounced on the rebound to bundle the loose ball in to the net. Asha Townsend then fired a stunner from 20 yards to narrow the gap further and ensure that Cheney had to defend resolutely for the closing minutes to secure the three points.
