EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING We must not only accept but ask for but demand the whole counsel of God
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. (2 Timothy 4:1 5)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Timothy s Charge Preach The Word (2 Tim 4:2) The Word of God (2 Tim 2:9) The Word Of Truth (2 Tim 2:15) Not Jewish fables or old wives fables (1 Tim 1:4,7; 2 Tim 4:4; Ti 1:14) Fables properly means speeches or discourse (Albert Barnes) The word of God only is able to save souls (Jas 1:21)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Timothy s Charge Be Ready (2 Tim 4:2) In Season: in season {eukairos} when opportunity is present, when all things are favorable, and when there are not obstructions or hinderances,Cf Mk 14:11 They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time. (Mark 14:11 NAS95)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Timothy s Charge Be Ready (2 Tim 4:2) Out of Season {akairos} in- opportunity, pertaining to the lack of a favorable opportunity for doing something, unfavorable, when the time is not right Both are from kairos- an occasion i.e. set or proper time, always opportunity... Acts 17:1-5,12-13,16-17...
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Timothy s Charge We must remember the primary charge is to Timothy. He is the subject of the command He is to do the work of an evangelist at opportune times and in in-opportune times. He is to stand ready to preach the word at all times!
Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:19 21)
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so doye. (Acts 7:51)
But the house of Israel will not listen to you, because they will not listen to Me; for all the house of Israel are impudent and hard-hearted. (Ezekiel 3:7)
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thingwhereto I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Timothy s Charge Why was Timothy to embrace in season and out of season preaching? For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. (2 Timothy 4:6 KJV)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING The Objects of Timothy s Charge What should be the response to such preaching? Notice the many warnings issues to the Ephesians (Acts 20:26-32) (Eph 2:1-3; 4:14, 17-19; 5:1-7) (1 Tim 4:1-6, 10).. (2 Tim 4:3-4)
And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power (2 Thessalonians 1:7 9)
And with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:10 12)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING The Objects of Timothy s Charge In season and out of season should not only be accepted and embraced, but demanded, because we don t want anybodyto go to hell We must desire the sincere milk of the word to this very purpose
Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord. (1 Peter 2:1 3) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous (1 John 5:3)
EMBRACING IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON PREACHING Things That Prevent Some From Embracing In Season And Out Season Preaching No love for the truth (2 Thess 2:10- 12) Prejudice & Biases (2 Tim 4:3-4) Preferred Preachers (1 Kin 22:1-17) Misplaced loyalty . To family (Ephesians 5 & 6) (1 Tim 3:1-13)
