  1. Sir James Dyson Science Lesson 6

  2. Sir James Dyson was born on May 2nd1947 in Norfolk, England and is a designer and inventor.

  3. After leaving school, he attended Art school for a year before studying interior design. In 1974 he began his own company producing the Ballbarrow, a plastic wheelbarrow with a ball instead of a wheel.

  4. Dyson became very frustrated when factory filters got clogged up so he designed and built a cyclone particle collector. He then adapted this solution to home vacuum cleaners and worked for the next fiver years testing thousands of prototypes. Eventually he developed a model that swirled incoming dirty air around a cylindrical container. Within the container, a force separated the dust meaning that dusty air settled by gravity while the purified (clean) air escaped out the top.

  5. Dyson had invented the first bag-less vacuum cleaner but makers of these traditional cleaners showed no interest in it. Dyson became disillusioned (disappointed) with companies who had no interest in changing their designs and technology. It was a Japanese company who loved the design and from there, it became a huge success.

  6. In the 1990s, Dyson built a factory in England and began producing Dyson vacuum cleaners which are today, seen by many, as the highest quality cleaner that you can buy. Dyson has won numerous design awards and he continues to search for ways to improve daily life. In 2007, he was knighted. In 2012, he became the fourth richest man in England.
