Who are the dreamers?
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
“Dreamers” are undocumented young people
who were brought to the United States of
America as children from another country.
The DACA program began in 2012 under
the Obama Administration as a way for
Dreamers to live, work and attend school in
the United States without the fear of
deportation.
5
Reflection
Dreamers were brought to the United States when they were children.
Advocates for the DACA program argue that most Dreamers didn’t have
a choice to leave their country of origin and come to the U.S.
Do you recall there being things you didn’t have
choices about when you were younger?
6
Who are the dreamers?
Over 700,000 young people have been approved for the DACA program
between 2012 and 2017.
In order to qualify they must:
Have been15 or younger when arrived to US
Have resided in US since 2007
Be in school or obtained a GED
Have 0 criminal record
7
Who are the dreamers?
Dreamers come to the US as children, from all over the world. Though
studies show
most
dreamers come from:
Mexico
El Salvador
Guatemala
Dreamers live in all parts of the US. But research indicates most
Dreamers in the US live in:
California
Texas
Illinois
Hundreds of Dreamers serve in the United States Military.
8
Reflection
In order to qualify for the DACA program, undocumented youth must
either be enrolled in school or have received a GED or high school
diploma.
Why do you think this matters?

Where are they now?
President Biden’s path to citizenship + Dream Act of 2021
11
President Biden signed executive orders about immigration shortly after
being inaugurated in January and then, he sent immigration reform bill
to congress.
Senators Durbin and Graham
introduced bipartisan bill known
as the Dream Act of 2021.
Dream Act of 2021
12
The Dream Act of 2021 allows for Dreamers to obtain lawful,
permanent, resident status.
The act also changes the eligibility requirements for Dreamers. These
individuals must have:
Come to the US before turning 17 years old
Have been here for years
Be paying taxes
Pass a background check
Be enrolled in school
What is a “Pathway to Citizenship”?
13
Once someone qualifies for the Dream Act of 2021, they can become a
temporary permanent resident.
In order to gain permanent residency, they must:
Get college degree
Enroll in military for 2 years
Work consistently for 3 years
Once they are a permanent resident with a permanent green card, they
can apply for citizen through the naturalization process.
Reflection
Even with the new legislation, it still seems like these politicians are
obsessed with Dreamers being in school.
Why do you think this matters?
