Objective I can use basic multiplication facts and number patterns to multiply by multiples of 10.
Set the Purpose You have already learned basic multiplication facts. Today, you will use those basic facts and patterns with zero to multiply by multiples of 10.
Connect What are some things that might come in groups of tens? What might be an easy way to count things that are in groups of ten?
Pose the Problem - Partners Find the products by using repeated addition. What patterns do you see in the products? 5 x 30 = 2 x 40 = 9 x 20 =
Demonstrate What repeated addition sentence does 5 x 30 represent? 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 = 150
Multiplying Find the basic fact in each sentence. For example, in 20 X 6, the basic fact is 2 X 6. What is the basic fact in 50 X 4? Next count the number of zeros in the multiple of 10. How many zeros are there in 50? Write that many zeros after your basic fact. 50 X 4 = 200
Whole Class Discussion Underline the basic fact in each factor and the product of that basic fact in each sentence. 2 x 40 40 + 40 = 80 6 x 20 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 120 What patterns do you see in these multiplication sentences? There is a basic fact in each sentence. There is also a zero written after each product in the fact. What rule can we make for multiplying a single-digit number by a multiple of 10? Find the product of the basic fact and write a zero after that product.
