  1. Writing Multiplication Stories LESSON 4-4 CCSS 3.OA.1, 3.OA.3, 3.OA.5

  2. Warm Up Draw an array and write a multiplication number sentence for these multiplication problems. 3 x 4 2 x 8

  3. Think and Write What real-life situations could you use to write multiplication number stories? Remember, when you multiply, you count numbers of equal groups.

  4. Creating Multiplication Stories Which operation is multiplication related to? Since multiplication and addition are related, they use similar key words in number stories. Key Word Examples: IN ALL ALTOGETHER TOTAL SUM COMBINED JOIN PLUS

  5. Multiplication Key Words There are a few words that signal a problem is asking you to multiply. These are: EQUAL GROUPS TIMES AS MANY EACH PRODUCT

  6. Key Word Practice Find and write the key words in each problem. 1. Alayna has 3 cookies. Josh has 4 times as many cookies as Alayna. How many cookies does Josh have? 2. Janae bakes cupcakes. She puts them in 4 rows with 5 cupcakes in each row. How many cupcakes does she have in all?

  7. Problem 1 Work with a partner to create a number story for 4 x 5. Remember to use key words. What strategies did you use to create your number story?

  8. Problem 2 On your own, create an equal groups number story for 4 X 2.

  9. Problem 3 Write a times as many number story for 2 x 3.
