  3. What happens if my project doesn t work the first time?

  4. An example of a STEM Career Mechanical engineers are part of your everyday life, designing the spoon you used to eat your breakfast, your breakfast's packaging, the flip-top cap on your toothpaste tube, the zipper on your jacket, the car, bike, or bus you took to school, the chair you sat in, the door handle you grasped and the hinges it opened on, and the ballpoint pen you used to take your test. Virtually every object that you see around you has passed through the hands of a mechanical engineer. Consequently, their skills are in demand to design millions of different products in almost every type of industry.

  5. A look at STEM in action!

  6. Project #1: Sorting Machine Time to gather your materials! Items from home: Tape Scissors Items from bag: Paper Straw Sticks Beads Cups

  7. Directions Look at your materials. Think about: How to separate the beads by size. Where the beads will start and end up. How the beads will move. Will they roll? Will you shake your machine?

  8. Use these images of a tomato sorter to inspire you Use the materials to build your sorting machine. Test it by putting the beads in. If the beads come out still mixed up, try different ideas to improve your machine.

  9. Need some ideas?

  10. Project #2: Paper Plate Pinball/Marble Maze What is a pinball machine?
