Implementation of a cell phone policy at Richwoods High School was driven by the need to enhance English grades and academic performance. The policy aims to reduce distractions and disruptions caused by non-academic cell phone use in classrooms. Results from previous semesters showed significant improvements in English grades following the policy's implementation. Guidelines have been set for students on managing cell phones during classes, with provisions for emergencies. The modified policy for English 4 includes restrictions on cell phone use during class time to prioritize academic focus and productivity.

  1. Cell Phone Policy English 4 (Fall 2022 Spring 2023)

  2. Why a "No Cell Phone Policy" is Needed In an effort to raise English grades and maximize student potential to earn their required English credits at Richwoods High School, a cell phone policy will be implemented to provide an optimal learning environment for students that will reduce student distractions and class disruptions caused from cell phone use for non-academic purposes. This policy was implemented by English 2 teachers after students became unresponsive to redirection to use cell phones appropriately in English class during the Fall 2021 Semester. Data gathered during the Spring 2022 semester showed that English 2 failures dropped from around 25% to 11% and grades improved overall.

  3. Grades English 2 Grades Fall Semester (2021) A s 5.7% B/C s 43.8% D s - 25.5% F s 25% Of all the grades earned at RHS during 1stsemester, only 5% were F s. A's B's & C's D's F's

  5. Policy Guidelines Cell phones may be kept in students lockers. If a student chooses to bring a cell phone into the classroom, it must be turned off and kept in the student s book bag or in the cell phone holder provided in the classroom. Not on your desk or in your cap. Not in your pocket or on your lap. We don t want to see them here or there. We don t want to hear them anywhere.

  6. What if there is an emergency and my family needs to contact me? English class only lasts for 50 minutes. However, in case of an emergency that cannot wait 50 minutes where a student needs to be contacted immediately, the parent or guardian has 3 options. 1. Contact the school s main office. 2. Email the classroom teacher 3. Contact the student s AP.

  7. English 4 Modified Cell Phone Policy No phones should be out during the first 30 minutes of class. They should not be audible or visible during this time. You will have time in class to complete your assignments. Work should be completed and submitted prior to using your cell phone for non-academic purposes, and your use of the cell phone should not distract other students from learning. All course work will be done through MS Teams. You will need to have a computer or school issued stream for class. Cell phones will not be allowed for Summative Assignments. Getting your work done first is important with the new grading policy, as missing summative grades will now be marked as a 0% rather than a 40%.

  8. English 4 Modified Cell Phone Policy Cell phones should be put away and out of sight during SSR Wednesdays. No cell phones will be allowed during presentations by students, teachers, or guest speakers. No cell phone call or Face Time will be allowed in the classroom, and you may not record or photograph other students, as these actions may violate privacy policies. If an individual violates these policies, then he or she will receive 1 reminder. If the cell phone continues to be a problem, then the student will be asked to put the phone in the cell phone holder in the front of the classroom. Refusal to do so will result in a referral.

  9. Cell Phone - Remediation 1st Offense: Warning recorded in Skyward /parent or guardian notified Additional Offenses: Students will receive referrals in Skyward for additional offenses. Depending on the frequency of the student s referrals, he or she may receive a warning from the AP, a detention to serve after school, or the cell phone may be confiscated by the AP. If the cell phone is confiscated by the AP, the student may be able to retrieve it after school. If the cell phone is confiscated repeatedly for cell phone referrals, the student s parent or guardian may have to pick up the cell phone from the AP s office and arrange a conference with the student, the teacher, and the AP.
