Analyzing and Using DRA Data for 3rd Grade Students
The DRA assessment is a diagnostic tool to monitor progress in reading levels throughout the school year. Testing results guide instruction to improve student achievement. Data shows proficiency levels and suggests strategies for different student groups: red and yellow students need support below grade level 24, while green and blue students are on or above grade level. Strategies include differentiated instruction and enrichment activities.

PURPOSE OF THE ASSESSMENT The DRA is intended to be used as a diagnostic and progress monitoring tool to assess reading levels throughout the school year. The DRA testing results are to be used to inform instruction and increase student achievement across the content areas.

WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT OUR RED AND YELLOW STUDENTS? If your students are in the red, they are reading below a level 24 which is well below grade level proficiency at this time. If your students are in the yellow, they are approaching grade level proficiency and are reading at a level 24-28. SUGGESTIONS: Differentiated small-group instruction in phonics, fluency, and comprehension Read aloud texts that may be challenging, providing all students the opportunity to boost their comprehension and engage in collaborative conversations. Guide readers individually and in small groups (meaningful guided reading) Provide your students with ample time for high-success independent reading.
WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT OUR GREEN AND BLUE STUDENTS? If your students are in the green, they are reading on grade-level at this time. If your students are in the blue they are reading at a level 34 or above and are reading above the expected grade-level target at this time. SUGGESTIONS: Differentiated instruction with complex text Literature circles Integrate technology Encourage goal setting Independent learning projects Enrichment activities Standards-based practice
