  2. Sign In sheet PLEASE COMPLETE THE SIGN IN SHEET AND PASS IT TO ALL PARTICIPANTS.

  3. Learning objectives Personnel will know the required PPE items to DON PRIOR to NP specimen collection. Personnel will understand steps taken during the NP specimen collection, storage and transport processes. Personnel will be able to return demo the NP specimen collection process.

  7. Nasopharyngeal (NP) Specimen Collection PROCEDURES CONTINUED Open the specimen collection kit. Ask the individual to remove his/her surgical mask to perform the procedure and have them replace it when done. The distance from the individual nose to the ear gives an estimate of the distance the swab should be inserted. Have the individual tilt his/her head back gently. Steady their head by placing your hand on their chin with your non- dominant hand.

  8. Nasopharyngeal (NP) Specimen Collection PROCEDURES CONTINUED .. Insert the swab into the nostril straight back (not upwards) and back to the nasopharynx. Leave the swab in for a few seconds. Slowly withdraw swab with a rotating motion. If possible, do the other nostril with the same swab.

  9. Nasopharyngeal (NP) Specimen Collection PROCEDURES CONTINUED Place the swab immediately into the sterile vial containing 2 mL of viral transport media (VTM). Break off or bend the end of the applicator shaft to close the vial tightly. Ensure that the vial displays the individual s name, specimen source, and date obtained.
