WELCOME TO YEAR 6 Staff this year: Mrs Jacques Mrs Gresty Mrs Moran Mrs Holt
Classes have their own start and finish times, separate play times and lunch times. Assemblies are taking place through Teams in classes not in the hall. We are avoiding children from different bubbles being in communal areas like cloakrooms and toilets at the same time. In class, children sit in pairs and face the front. They stay in their place for all lessons. If they use the ICT suite for support sessions they have a place to sit and areas are cleaned between groups. Toilets are cleaned 5 times a day and tables and handles in classes are cleaned at lunch time.
Lap tops, ipads and PE equipment are cleaned before and after use. Drama activities are completed in the hall or outside. Children have their own tissues. They can bring their own too. Handwashing and sanitising happens frequently throughout the day. They can bring a hand cream if they want to. They need to bring in a water bottle filled with water as we can t use communal fountains. They can bring 2 if needed. We are encouraging children to give each other space i.e not too many from the class in the cloakroom, toilet or at the sinks at any one time.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOUR CHILD GETS ILL? WE KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON CHILDREN DURING THE SCHOOL DAY IF A CHILD APPEARS TO BE UNWELL WE WILL TAKE THEIR TEMPERATURE IF THEY FEEL HOT. IF THEY HAVE A TEMPERATURE HIGHER THAN 37 OR A CONTINUOUS COUGH THEN THEY WILL BE TAKEN TO THE ISOLATION ROOM AND YOU WILL BE CALLED TO COLLECT THEM. IF A CHILD IS SENT HOME WITH ANY COVID-19 SYMPTOMS THEN THEY WILL NEED TO HAVE A TEST BEFORE BEING ALLOWED BACK IN SCHOOL. Spellings lists will be put on the Year 6 class page weekly. Children still need to learn their Year 5/6 100 words. They have highlighted lists in school. A full list plus some strategies to use to learn spellings is also on the Year 6 class page.
PE PE is on Thursday and Friday with Mrs Gresty. Next half term, we have a coach on Thursday afternoon. Children need to wear their PE kit to school on PE days. They can wear black or blue joggers and trainers. Pumps can be kept in bags for indoor PE. They should wear a school jumper or cardigan not a sports hoodie.
Homework Homework will be set on Friday and should be handed in by Thursday. Children will be set homework on Microsoft Teams. They will have arithmetic and reading comprehension. Children will be provided with mark schemes so they and you can check their work as self marking can be really useful for their learning. You could also use the answers if a child is stuck to help them. I will mark homework weekly on Teams and send children a comment and housepoints. Late homework will not be able to be submitted as there is a deadline set on Teams. There is a homework award in Smile assembly to encourage children to complete their homework. If homework is not completed 3 weeks in a row I will send you a text. If homework is not completed for a whole half term Mr Waddington will contact you. After SATS, homework will be linked to topic work.
Reading books. Children will be able to change reading books on Friday. They don t have to change their book every week. Some children are reading quite thick books and may need longer. Children are responsible for changing their book when finished and recording this and their comments in their record in their reading journal. Reading journals stay in school. Returned books will be kept in a sealed box for 72 hours before being returned to the class library. Reading will be taught through English lessons and guided reading. They will also work on SATs style comprehension questions and texts to prepare them from tests both in terms of types of SATs question and to improve their speed and fluency.
Educational Visits Usually we will go on visits to enhance our curriculum. We will also have some events in school. Young Shakespeare Next Friday Fusiliers Museum- The museum is closed so this trip is not happening this term. Crucial Crew usually spring 1. Viking visit in the summer. School nurse summer puberty talk for boys and drop in for girls. This year, we will need to build in puberty for girls too as they missed this in Year 5.
SATS- Monday 10th May to Thursday 13th May 2021. 1. SATs assess children on the whole of the KS2 curriculum. Grammar, punctuation and spelling. The children take one 45 minute grammar and punctuation test linked to the new KS2 English curriculum objectives. They will also take a spelling test which covers spelling patterns and rules from the whole KS2 curriculum. Reading. The children take one test lasting an hour. They will complete comprehension questions linked to the KS2 national curriculum reading objectives. Maths 1. 30 minute arithmetic paper. 2. 2 x 40 minute papers to test fluency, problem solving and reasoning. This will cover units from the KS2 curriculum. There will no longer be level 6 tests, higher level questions will be incorporated into the above tests.
SCALED SCORE A child s raw test score will be converted into a scaled score from 85-120. 100 is considered to be meeting age related expectations. Currently 110 is considered to be working at greater depth. This is the case for reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling and maths.
WRITING We will collect independent writing in the children s best writing books. These pieces will cover all genres from the national curriculum. We will teach the children all of the writing objectives from KS2 curriculum and encourage them to demonstrate as many of them as they possibly can in their writing. At the end of the year, instead of a test the children will be given a teacher assessment based on these samples using the recommended government criteria for writing. Children will then be awarded working towards, working at expected standard (EXE) or working at greater depth.
Extra notices Please fill in High School forms asap. Please remember children are not allowed to bring mobile phones, fit bits or watches which can access the internet.
