Year 8 to Year 10 Science curriculum covers a range of topics including Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics. Students engage in experiments, research investigations, and data analysis. Year 9 topics include ecosystems, atomic structure, plate tectonics, light, and electricity. In Year 10, students specialize in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology preparing for senior science studies. Semester 1 explores evolution, energy sources, and global spheres, while Semester 2 delves into Newton's laws, genetics, and space science.

  1. JUNIOR SCIENCE Year 8 into 9

  2. Year 9 & 10 Science Science is compulsory in years 9 & 10 We continue to cover the four units of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics in both years Assessment includes exams, like those you have already been doing, and we introduce new tasks similar to those that are done in the senior sciences (see below) Student Experiment involves the modification of an experiment and generation of a scientific report Research Investigation creation of a research question from a claim, gathering of secondary data and drawing a conclusion to write a report Data test specifically testing analysis of data

  3. Year 9 Topics Biology Ecosystems & Human impact; Homeostasis Coordination and control systems in the body Chemistry Atomic structure, formula writing and balancing equations; Acids and bases; Nuclear Chemistry isotopes and decay Earth Science - Plate tectonics movement of the earth s crust, earthquakes; Continental Drift Physics Light, lenses & the human eye; Sound waves & energy; Electricity & electric circuits

  4. Year 10 Science In Semester 1, all students complete two general science units Biology/Chemistry general Science unit Physics/Earth Science general Science unit In Semester 2, all students have the option to specialise in any two of Physics, Chemistry or Biology (in preparation for senior) OR complete another two general science units (for those not wishing to do a senior science)

  5. Year 10 Semester 1 Topics Biology/Chemistry general Science unit Evolution theories of evolution, natural selection, speciation and evidence of evolution; Periodic table properties of metals and non-metals, special groups e.g. noble gases Physics/Earth Science general Science unit Energy renewable and noon-renewable energy sources, energy usage, managing and saving energy ; Earth Spheres four global spheres, chemical cycles, human impact on the four spheres

  6. Semester 2 Topics Specialist Physics Newton s Laws of motion, force, speed and acceleration Specialist Chemistry Formation of ions, formula writing and equations, typed of reactions, rates of reactions, moles. Specialist Biology Genetics Biology/Chemistry general Science unit Reaction rates; Genetics Physics/Earth Science general Science unit Space science, rocket motion; Big Bang Theory, stars

  7. Semester 2 Topics Further information is sent out in Term 2 of Year 10 regarding your choices for Semester 2 You should discuss with your teachers and your parents what your best options will be If you are planning on doing a senior science then you MUST do the relevant specialist units. For further information, please speak to your Science teacher or the Head of Science Ms Fitzpatrick
