17thSouthern African and Islands Hydrographic Commission (SAIHC) Meeting KENYA NATIONAL REPORT by Lucy Mburu Republic of Kenya 3rd 4thFebruary, 2021
1. Achievements for the Year Ended S/No. Item Description a). Survey of Fish Landing Sites Lake Victoria fish landing areas b) Shore Lining and Extension of Vertical Controls Lake Naivasha C) Accession to IHO Approved by the National Assembly Prepared and ready for submission to the Government of Monaco Prepared and being implemented d) Instruments of Accession to IHO National Strategy on IMO Instrument Implementation National Committee meetings e) h) Bi-annually
2. New Charts, New Publications and Updates Kenyan has an MOU with UKHO on chart production. Need to help Kenya in building the capacity to produce charts. The issues on outdated charts need to be addressed. New surveys are encouraged Kenya is keen in up scaling her capacity on chart production
3. Capacity Building One officer acquired Category A training under sponsorship of Nippon foundation at New Hemisphere University Need to training on Marine cartography and Category A in Hydrography Implementation of IMO audit, May 2018 recommendations ongoing and a National Strategy on IMO Instruments is in place Improve on data acquisition and chart producing capabilities
4 Proposed Programme Acquisition of hydrographic survey equipment to enable carry out surveys and process data Procure and establish a tide station New hydrographic survey and produce new charts for critical areas Attain IHO membership
5. Challenges Lack of practical experience Little or no data sharing by data producers Inadequate expertise in marine cartography Inadequate capacity Inadequate Funding
6. Conclusion Kenya is grateful for the efforts made by SAIHC, IHO and other international organization in building her hydrographic capabilities. This has assisted in meeting some of her national and international obligations The country is committed to the promotion of international cooperation and collaboration in the field of hydrography for the realization of blue economy. There is need for continuous support for practical training to achieve necessary experience in hydrographic surveys and chart production Instruments of Accession to IHO will soon be deposited with the Government of Monaca Kenya is keen on upscaling its capacity in Hydrographic Surveys and Nautical Charting
