The Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) at the University of Kentucky focuses on reducing the burden of injuries across the state. Founded in 1994, KIPRC works on surveillance, data analysis, and prevention of injuries related to falls, poisonings, fires, motor vehicles, and violence. They also support the Kentucky Safety and Prevention Alignment Network (KSPAN) to improve injury surveillance and implement evidence-based prevention programs.

KSPAN is a diverse coalition working to improve Kentucky s core capacity to perform injury surveillance and epidemiology, and to implement and evaluate evidence-based injury prevention and control programs.

Provide injury data, training, technical assistance, and other forms of support to communities that are interested in achieving Safe Community designation. Communities across Kentucky will form the Kentucky Safe Communities America Network to share programs and successes in the area of injury and violence prevention. KSPAN will support communities in their quest to be designated as Safe Communities and in doing the hard work necessary to earn this recognition.

KIPRC serving as an affiliate Safe Communities Support Center and will partner with KSPAN members on community level implementations of evidence based interventions.

What is this thing called culture? Culture is a combination of : Attitudes, Behaviors, Beliefs, Values, Ways of doing things, and Other shared characteristics of a particular group of people. Culture Can: Socialize newcomers. Define influence. Determine values. When these criteria are consistently and effectively aimed at accident reduction, a positive culture of safety is created 8

Kentucky Injury Prevention & Research Center In response to tragic deaths that occurred on local highways, the Madison County Health Department recognized injury prevention as a public health issue and developed the Madison County Safety Coalition in 2000. Since the coalition's inception, it has been a leader in injury prevention efforts in our community.
