  2. COMPLETE YOUR VOCABULARY WORKSHEET FROM SWIMMING TO ANTARCTICA 30 MINUTES. You worked on this before we started the Writing Lab last week. Find your worksheet, complete it, and submit it to your class basket. If you have finished the worksheet and submitted it, you have SSR time in your Independent Reading Book.

  4. READ FROM SWIMMING TO ANTARCTICA Please read along with the audio on pp. 62-74. I will stop on occasion and ask you to do a Quick Write on your Cornell Notes.

  5. QUICK WRITE AT 6:20 What is Lynne Cox about to do? Why is this significant? How do you feel as you listen to her prepare for this dangerous feat?

  6. QUICK WRITE AT 12:05 Describe some of the mental images you have of the scene that Lynne Cox is describing. How does she draw you into her narrative? What do you think will happen next? Will she achieve the swim or be forced to give up?

  7. QUICK WRITE AT 18:45 Describe how Cox s body reacts to the life-threatening swim. How did the crew on the Zodiacs affect Cox? Why did the Zodiacs change their course so often?

EXIT TICKET 9/13/16: Last week, we focused on WRITING, and we covered important topics like your introduction, your thesis statement, finding textual evidence to support claims, and synthesizing your ideas in a strong concluding paragraph. Tell me what you learned from this writing assignment and the skills we worked on last week

  10. CONTINUE WITH SWIMMING TO ANTARCTICA QUICK WRITE AT 24:50 Is Cox able to communicate with anyone on the Zodiacs? What would they need to discuss? How long has Cox been swimming? What animal does she describe? What information do the animals provide to her with their appearance? How do they make her feel?

  11. LAST QUICK WRITE AT THE END OF STORY Go back to the beginning of the text and name three ways that Cox prepared for this swim. For each method of preparation, name the intended effect it was supposed to have to help her. What were all the pieces that had to come together in order for Cox to make this historic swim? What were two reasons she wanted to make the swim?
