Ohio High School Graduation Requirements for Class of 2023 and Beyond
Students in Ohio must earn 22 credits in various subjects including English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health, and Physical Education, along with additional credits if needed. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS For the class of 2023 and beyond
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS To earn a high school diploma in Ohio, students must fulfill each of the 3 separate requirement areas: Credits Competency Readiness 22 Credits Algebra I English II Earn 2 of possible 12 seals This presentation can serve as a guide, but more detailed information can be found on the Ohio Department of Education Graduation manual
CREDITS 4 English 4 Math (Including Algebra II) 3 Social Studies 3 Science .5 Health .5 P.E. .5 Financial Literacy (*class of 2025 and beyond) Additional credits to reach 22
COMPETENCY In addition to the required 22 CREDITS, students must earn a COMPETENCY score on 2 specific end-of-course exams which are also referred to as a Ohio State Tests or OSTS Credits Competency Readiness 22 Credits Algebra I English II Earn 2 of possible 12 seals The score required for Algebra I and English II is a 684. Tests are also scored 1-5, and a 684 falls in the high 2 range. Students will automatically be given these tests the spring of the year they are enrolled in each class.
COMPETENCY - Alternatives In general, most CHS students will be able to reach the required scores on the Algebra I and English II at the completion of each course. However, Ohio law established three alternatives to demonstrating competency on state tests after students have re- tested in Algebra I and/or English II and still not met point requirements. 1. Remediation-Free Score on the ACT or SAT See slide 14 for required scores. 2. College Credit Plus Earn college credit in a non-remedial math or English course (for the subject area not passed) to demonstrate competency. 3. Career Experience and Technical Skill Complete two demonstrations to show competency, at least one of which must be a foundational option. 4. Military Readiness Meeting the requirements to enlist in the military, demonstrated by a enlistment contract. READINESS In addition to CREDIT and COMPETENCY requirements, students must also demonstrate READINESS by earning 2 of the 12 possible seals. Credits Competency Readiness 22 Credits Algebra I English II Earn 2 of 12 possible seals State law created 12 diploma seals for students to demonstrate academic, technical and professional readiness for careers, college, the military, or self-sustaining professions. Seals earned will appear on both the student transcript and the diploma.
READINESS Of the 12 seals, 9 are State-Defined Seals and 3 are Locally-Defined Seals. 3 LOCALLY-DEFINED SEALS Community Service Student Engagement Fine and Performing Arts 9 STATE-DEFINED SEALS* Science Citizenship Biliteracy Honors Diploma Technology College-Ready OhioMeansJobs Industry Recognized Credential Military Enlistment *At least 1 of the 2 required READINESS Seals must be a State-Defined seal!
READINESS - State-Defined Seals SCIENCE SEAL Earn a score of 3 (proficient) or higher on the Biology End of Course Exam OR Earn a letter grade of B or higher in a Biology 3-credit hour College Credit Plus course OR Earn a final grade of B or higher in a CHS science course other than Physical Science or Biology There is also the possibility of AP Testing, but CHS doesn t offer AP courses in Science.
READINESS - State-Defined Seals CITIZENSHIP SEAL Earn a score of 3 (proficient) or higher on BOTH the Am. Hst and Am. Gov t EOC s. OR Earn a letter grade of B or higher in CCP courses of Am. Hst and Am. Gov t. OR Earn a letter grade of B or higher in BOTH the CHS Am. Hst and Am. Gov t courses Note: Students can use differing score sources for the two required areas of History and Government There is also the possibility of AP Testing, but CHS doesn t offer AP courses in Am. Hst or Am. Gov t.
READINESS - State-Defined Seals TECHNOLOGY SEAL Earn 1 credit in any combination of two semester courses, or earn credit in a full year courses. *These courses are listed below. OR Earn a final course grade that is equivalent to a B or higher in an appropriate class taken through the College Credit Plus program There is also the possibility of AP Testing, but CHS doesn t offer AP courses in Computer Science *Courses that could give Technology Seal: Year Long Courses: CTF Microsoft Certification Semester Long Courses: (Must take 2) DTP Photoshop Video Production Web Design I and II AV Tech
READINESS - State-Defined Seals HONORS DIPLOMA SEAL Academic Honors Diploma (all but one of the following) 4 Math (1 higher than Alg 2) 4 Science 4 Social Studies 3 of same Foreign Language or 2 credits of 2 different For. Lang. 1 Fine Art 3.5 on a 4.0 scale (CHS weights honors classes) 27 on ACT The ODE has more information on additional options here
READINESS - State-Defined Seals COLLEGE READY SEAL Earn remediation free scores on ACT as outlined below: ACT Reading 22 ACT English ACT Math 18 22 The Ohio Department of Higher Education works with Ohio universities to set the remediation-free scores for the ACT. The remediation-free score that is in place on Feb 1 of a student's junior year is the score needed to satisfy the requirements for the College Ready Seal.
READINESS - State-Defined OhioMeansJobs SEAL Demonstrate proficiency in each of 15 identified professional skills AND Use the OhioMeansJobs Readiness Seal Form to record demonstration of each professional skill AND Work with 3 mentors to validate each skill across a minimum of two of the three environments (school, work, community)
READINESS - State-Defined Seals INDUSTRY RECOGNIZED CREDENTIAL SEAL Earn a 12-point approved industry-recognized credential OR Earn a group of credentials totaling 12 points in a single career field. More detailed information can be found here
READINESS - State-Defined Seals MILITARY ENLISTMENT SEAL Provide evidence that a student has enlisted in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
READINESS - State-Defined Seals BILITERACY SEAL* Demonstrate proficiency requirements on assessments in a world language and English. Students must meet requirement in both areas: English A proficient score (3) on ELA II World Language A score of 4 or higher on an AP foreign language examination *This seal is currently unattainable at CHS as we don t offer AP Foreign Language.
READINESS - Locally-Defined Seals SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT SEAL Earn 3 units of meaningful participation in a student group, extracurricular, or sport (Unit is defined by a completed season, completion of activity, etc) Meaningful participation in any activities that meet outside of the school day and/or club/group that meets during the school day or relevant class (i.e. yearbook, Teen Mentoring, Student Council etc.) Signed off by advisor/coach/teacher annually Any student who is ineligible due to discipline and/or academic issues cannot count that season/activity towards this seal as determined by administration
READINESS - Locally-Defined Seals FINE ARTS SEAL Earn 2 credits in ANY of the Fine & Performing subject areas: Music, Band, Visual, and Graphic Arts OR Earn 1 credit in Fine & Performing Arts AND participation in at least one community/school performance.
READINESS - Locally-Defined Seals COMMUNITY SERVICE SEAL Complete a minimum of 120 hours of verified community service through a service organization or club Student will complete log of hours signed off by the organization (completed annually)
REVIEW OF REQUIREMENTS To review, students must meet the requirements of all 3 areas in order to graduate in Ohio.
