  1. What is a sentence? Read these words. across lake. the rowed children The We can combine these words so they make sense and mean something, like this: The children the rowed across lake. Linking words together in the right way creates sentences. A sentence needs a verb in it and it must make complete sense all on its own. When you write the sentence, it needs a capital letter at the beginning and a punctuation mark at the end, like a full stop (.), a question mark (?) or an exclamation mark (!).

  2. Compose a sentence Before you can write a sentence, you need to be able to say a sentence. Which answer is a complete sentence? Aah, yeah, okay, thanks. Good morning, how are you feeling today? I am feeling a little tired. How do you know?

  3. Compose a sentence There is no verb in the first response so it is not a sentence. The second response has a verb and means something. Aah, yeah, okay, thanks. Good morning, how are you feeling today? I am feeling a little tired. To help reply to a question in a full sentence, try and repeat part of the question in your answer.

  4. Practise Answer these questions in full sentences. Remember, to help answer in a full sentence, try and repeat part of the question in your answer or for these questions start your answer with the word I . Where do you live? How old are you? What is your favourite food? How do you like your toast? Where are you going?

  5. Composing sentences When composing a simple sentence, think of a verb and then who does the action (the subject). Now, combine these with linking words to create a sentence. sleep Tigers eat meat. eat Tigers live in jungles. live The tiger dived into the river. dive Tigers like to sleep when it is hot. roar The tiger roared loudly at the mouse.

  6. Practise Say a sentence to a partner using one of these verbs. You can change the tense of the verb. Your partner s job is to confirm you have said a complete sentence.

  7. Super challenge Compose a simple sentence for each picture to create a summary of the sequence of events shown.
