LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the lesson students will be able to- # know about sentence # Know about structurally sentences # Understand simple, compound and complex sentences # make sentences using simple, compound and complex structure # Use coordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions # Subordinating conjunctions and clauses # change from simple to compound , compound to complex and complex to simple or vice- versa
WHAT IS A SENTENCE? Definition: A sentence is a group of words which denote us a clear meaning of the speaker or subject. Examples: (i) I read a book but he does not read at all. (ii) She is going to college when it is 8am. (iii) Though he is poor, he honest. (iv) By taking exercise regularly, you can be healthy. (v) He is too weak to walk.
LETS KNOW ABOUT SIMPLE SENTENCES Definition : Simple sentence is that sentence which has one subject and one finite verb (changed according to number, person and tense). There are some simple sentences which have None-Finite verb. Examples : (i) You can do the sum. (One subject = You, One Finite verb= can do) (ii) He wants to be a doctor.(One subject = He, One Finite Verb = wants, None-Finite = to be) (iii) By reading attentively, he will get A+. (One subject = he, One Finite Verb = will get, None-Finite Verb = By reading N.B: In the simple sentence two subjects can also be used if the n are made by As and two subjects are different) Example: (a) As the weather is rough , we cancelled our picnic. Simple: The weather being rough, we cancelled our picnic.

LETS CHECK OUT ANSWERS: (i) Despite : Despite this situation, there are many institutions in our country. (ii) In order to : He works hard in order to succeed in life. (iii) Present participle : Washing hands, we should sit to eat.
LETS KNOW ABOUT COMPOUND SENTENCES Definition: Compound sentence is that sentence which has one subjects or two subjects, one or two Finite verb and a coordinating conjunction or FANBOYS (For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). Examples: (i) He is poor but honest. (One subject= He, One Finite Verb = is, coordinating conjunction = but) (ii) He works hard and succeeds in life. (iii) You are industrious and you can prosper in life. N.B: Coordinating conjunctions make coordinating clauses. Coordinating clauses are called dependent clauses.

LETS KNOW ABOUT COMPLEX SENTENCES Definition: A complex sentence is that sentence which has two subjects, two Finite Verbs and a Subordinating Conjunction (as, since, because, when, though, although, so that, in order that, if, unless etc.) Examples: (i) Though he is poor, he is honest. (Subordinating conjunction= Though , two subjects= he, he , two finite Verbs= is, is) (ii) He works hard so that he can succeed in life. (Subordinating conjunction= so that , two subjects= he, he , two finite Verbs= works, can succeed) N.B.: Subordinating conjunctions make subordinating clauses. Subordinating clauses are called dependent clauses.
GROUP WORK 5 MINUTES Make three complex sentence using when , If & Unless
LETS CHECK OUT ANSWERS When : When it was 1971, we got our independence. If : If you come, I shall go. Unless: He will fail in the exam unless he reads well. N.B. Subordination conjunctions can be used in the beginning of the sentences or in the middle of the sentences.
HOME WORKS (a) Read the sentences carefully and write the name of the sentences: (i) Because he is ill, he doesn t go to school. (ii) Do or die. (iii) I know the man who came here yesterday. (iv) He studied a lot in order that he could make a good result. (v) He was too poor to buy a uniform. (b) Write at least 5 simple, compound and complex sentences.
