  1. Mystic Rose

  2. A Mystic Rose is a beautiful image created by joining points around a circle. You will need: A pen or pencil (lots of different colours if you prefer) A piece of paper A pair of compasses or something round (like a plate) to draw around A protractor or a good eye to judge with Patience!

  3. Step 1 Draw a circle either using a pair of compasses or by drawing around a household object (I found a small plate works well). diameter A circle with a diameter of about 10-15cm works well.

  4. Step 2 Divide the circle into equal sections around the circumference, either using a protractor or by judging, as best as you can. In this example, the circle has been divided into 12 equal sections (every 30 degrees) but it works even better if you divide it into more sections. 20 sections makes it look great and requires you marking points every 18 degrees.

  5. Step 4 Using a ruler, join one of the points to every other point.

  6. Step 5 Repeat this by joining every point to every other point. It works best if you work systematically around the circumference so that you don t miss out any points.

  7. When youve finished it should look something like this. Beautiful!

  8. Challenge Can you figure out how many lines you ve drawn on your mystic rose? Hint If you d just had 2 points on your circumference, only one line would be needed. If 3 points, 3 lines. What about 4 points? And 5? Is there a pattern?

  9. Number of Points on Circumference of Circle Number of Lines 2 1 3 3 4 6 These are called triangle numbers! 5 10 6 15 7 21 8 28 9 36 10 45 11 55 12 66 13 78 14 91 15 105 16 120 17 136 18 153 19 171 20 190
