INTRODUCTION 1. Let us read about the poem MICE . 2. The poem MICE has been written by Poet ROSE FLYEMAN. 3. Mice is a small rodent that has a pointed snout, large eyes and ears and a long tail. 4. A mice,a rat and a mouse are all rodents but are different in shape, size , colour.

MICE- BY ROSE FLYEMAN I think mice Are rather nice. Their tails are long, Their faces small, They haven t any Chins at all. Their ears are pink, Their teeth are white, They run about The house at night.
They nibble things They shouldn t touch And no one seems To like them much. But I think mice Are nice.
1st Stanza: I think mice Are rather nice. Explanation: In the 1st stanza the poet thinks that mice are very nice although many people dislike mice because they infest homes and chew up wires, books, papers etc and run around, but in the poem the poet has kept aside all these nature of a mice and has given us a positive view of a mice.
2nd Stanza: Their tails are long, Their faces small, They haven t any Chins at all Explanation: In the 2nd stanza the poet explains about the body structure of a mice and that a mice has a long tail and their faces are small and they do not have chins at all.
3rd Stanza: Their ears are pink, Their teeth are white, They run about, The house at night. Explanation: In the 3rd stanza the poet explains that the mice have pink ears and white teeth and they like to run about here and there in the house at night.
4th Stanza: They nibble things They shouldn t touch And no one seems To like them much. Explanation: In the 4th stanza the poet explains how the mice keeps on nibbling (eating) things and stuff that aren t mean for them and that people don t like this behaviour or habits of a mice.
5th Stanza: But I think mice Are nice. Explanation: In the last stanza the poet says that although mice are nocturnal (active at night) rodents and nibble up things that aren t meant for them, the poet finds that mice are nice.
By reading this poem, how do you know that the poet likes mice? Does the poet write anything good about mice? How do you know? Reading the poem, what do you infer about the character of mice? Do you think mice are bad, naughty, playful?
Textual Question (page- 10). *Answer the following: Q1. Why do you think the poet likes mice? Ans: The poet likes mice because mice have a long tail and a small face with no chin at all. Q2. Why do some people think mice are not nice? Ans: Some people think that mice are not nice because they nibble things that they shouldn t touch. Q3. Do you think mice are nice or not nice? Ans: I think mice are nice because they are tiny and very cute with pink ears and white teeth. Q4. Which words in the poem rhyme? Ans: The words that rhyme in the poem are mice and nice, touch and much.
What do these words mean? 1. Nibble - to take small, quick bites at something. 2. Chew - repeated biting at something. 3. Gnaw - to bite at something. 4. Crunch - to chew or press with a crushing noise. 5. Grind - to make something into small pieces. Make a sentence using these words.
