The Ivy Plus Libraries are embarking on a project to collect, normalize, and analyze bibliographic and holdings records of single-part print monographs added to their catalogs between 2013-2017. The Task Force aims to enhance collaboration, streamline acquisitions, develop purchasing programs, and optimize resource allocation across participating institutions. Local Harvard Libraries Team, comprising professionals like Kevin Garewal and Allison Powers, will play a key role in this initiative.

  2. Charge of the Task Force: The project will collect, normalize, and analyze a set of bibliographic and holdings records from at least five of the participating institutions for single-part print monographs that have been added to the institutions catalogs over the 5-year period of 2013-2017. Once the data is available, the Project Task Force will work with local experts in collection development and assessment to test the utility of the data. The Project Task Force will use the results of the exercise to propose a plan to scale the initiative to encompass the entire Ivy Plus Libraries network and out to include additional data. The Project Task Force will note recommendations about the resources (technical, human, financial) required to move forward with a comprehensive Ivy Plus Libraries collections dataset. 3. Goals: 1. Implement data-informed collaborative arrangements that reduce duplication and gain efficiencies in acquisitions and collection management. 2. Implement cross-institutional purchasing programs (e.g. shared approval plans) to make available materials that users want but are not currently available and accessible in the Ivy Plus Libraries network 3. Participate in national shared print initiatives more effectively. 4. Develop algorithms to balance the network needs for multiple copies (e.g. popular titles, reserve titles, etc.) vs. the long-term storage costs of maintaining print copies in the system. Document data specifications: document the local extraction/transformation process for local records 4. Load data into Gold Rush 5. Finalize the research questions the data will answer 6. Analyze results 7. Document process and report recommendations Kevin Garewal LIBRARY.HARVARD.EDU @HarvardLibrary Harvard Law School Library
