Laredo College Dual Enrollment Program
Dual Enrollment Program Dual Enrollment is an umbrella term used to encapsulate multiple programs that allow High School Students to take College courses. Dual Credit: Student takes both High School and College Courses. College Courses replace specific High School Courses. Students generally earn 12-15 credits by their senior year. Early College: Students are selected on a Lottery bases and they attempt to finish an associates degree or a certification Early Enrollment: allows students to enroll is specific courses (Semester specific) on their own to advance College Credits, student under this program are fully responsible for all tuition and fees. No High School credit is granted.
Dual Enrollment Requirements To be eligible for enrollment in dual credit courses, high school students must meet the college's admission criteria. This includes requiring students to have a processed admission application and the proper permission forms approved by the district and the college. High school students must demonstrate eligibility to enroll in dual credit courses by meeting: (1) Texas Success Initiative (TSI) and dual credit standards; (2) LC's course placement requirements; and (3) high school grade average of 85. Students must remain in good standing at their high school and at LC while enrolled at both institutions. Students not in good standing will not be allowed to register for subsequent semesters while still enrolled. A GPA of less than 2.0 and grades of "F" earned at LC will indicate that the student is not in good standing. Scholastic Dishonesty is prohibited. includes but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and collusion.
Dual Enrollment Requirements Enrollment into Dual Enrollment courses requires the completion of the selected Academic/Career Technical district pathway. Courses selected by both School District and Laredo College. TSI exempt scores can be met through a combination of approved assessments indicated by the district.
Dual Enrollment Requirements First Time Student Returning Student Math: TSI Scores/Exemption Admissions Application Scores Reading & Writing: TSI Scores / Good GPA Exemption Scores Bacterial Meningitis Record/Waiver - for courses held at Laredo College If course is taken at LC campus, student must then provide a current Bacterial Meningitis Vaccine Record (MCV4 valid for 5 yrs) or a Waiver Form from Texas Department of State Health Services.
Students are exempt from TSI with the following Texas Success Initiative - TSI test scores AFTER - January 1, 2021 TSI College Readiness Standards & Dual Enrollment Eligibility Exemptions Reading / Writing CRC 945 AND Essay 5 OR Reading / Writing continued TSI 910-944 AND Diagnostic Level 5 AND Essay 5 Assessment Math CRC 950 OR 910-949 AND Diagnostic Level 6 English II 4000 or higher STARR EOC 4000 or higher & a passing grade (70 or higher) in the Algebra II course Algebra I English 431 or higher ACT-Aspire Math 435 or higher EBRW 480 or higher, no combined score SAT Math 530 or higher, no combined score English 19 or higher with a composite score of 23 Plan Math 19 or higher with a composite score of 23
HIGH SCHOOL POSTSECONDARY Educational Differences Individual students must manage their own time and schedules. Usually follow a school-directed schedule and proceed from one class to another. Assume homework is completed and students are able to perform on a test. May remind students of incomplete assignments. May not remind students of incomplete assignments. It's the students responsibility to check with their instructor to see if requirements are being met. Expect students to read, save, and refer back to the course syllabus. (Hint: Syllabi are your way of knowing exactly what is expected of each student-when assignments are due, and how they will be graded.) Often take time to remind students of assignment and test dates.
Parents like the prestige of having their children taking challenging college classes. But parents Dual Credit Courses are not the ones who have to do all the work, it is the student. Why do students like accelerated learning or more rigorous classes? More Challenging Accelerated classes are not just a repeat of things that they have already learned. More Advanced An escape of the regular high school classroom Conducive Learning Environment Students want to learn and be challenged to think critically. Most fellow classmates are motivated, and the classes provide a much more stimulating and creative learning environment.
Benefits Of The Program Dual enrollment students can explore college-level work while still supported by parents, teachers and counselors. Begin accumulating college credits; less time required after high school to finish a college degree. Students may be able to transfer credits earned to a college/university. Students may enjoy access to college library and resources as a college student would. Dual-enrollment classes often save students and parents money on tuition and textbooks. The Dual Enrollment Program is an opportunity to take courses at the college level at no cost to you. In Conclusion The amount of work necessary to succeed is greater than in high school courses, therefore commitment from students is essential as dual enrollment courses become part of a permanent college transcript. Students must be willing to meet deadlines for acceptance and work hard in the course to be successful.
