What the data & research tells us Individuals under the age of 19 from the most disadvantaged backgrounds are five times less likely to undertake a degree-level apprenticeship than those from the most advantaged areas. Since the levy was introduced, 36% fewer disadvantaged individuals are getting onto an apprenticeship Apprentices from disadvantaged background are less likely to continue in their apprenticeship and are more likely to drop out without completing. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds completing an apprenticeship receive a larger boost in their earnings than non-disadvantaged individuals. This is particularly true at intermediate level. www.amazingapprenticeships.com

What the data & research tells us There continue to be many underrepresented groups in apprenticeships FE Week analysis showed that the proportion of BAME 16- to 18-year-old apprentices is falling and made up just 7.7 per cent of starts in the first three-quarters of 2019/20 We know 1 in 5 working age adults have a declared disability, yet apprentices with declared disabilities currently make up just 13% of apprentices There are many groups that we do not have data for including Care Leavers www.amazingapprenticeships.com

What employers are telling us Struggle to find/reach the most disadvantaged especially once people are outside of the schooling system Struggle to get the approach right, and to address potential apprentices barriers/issues with confidence High drop-out rates during application processes due to time and/or stages in the process that aren t accessible People from less advantaged backgrounds self-selecting out of applying to prestigious/well-known institutions Cultural, familial or social biases against apprenticeships. www.amazingapprenticeships.com

There are some amazing people working at my employer - I don t think anyone was trying to keep me out but the business s processes just weren t designed for people in my situation.
