BACKGROUND OF APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM UNDER CURRENT STRUCTURE PART TIME BASIS FOR 4 YEARS THEORY/OFF THE JOB TRAINING NUS -200hrs PRACTICAL TRAINING/ON THE JOB-INDUSTIRES-1800hrs 9 EXISTING TRADES: (1)AUTOMOTIVE (2) ELECTRICAL (3) CARPENTRY AND JOINERY (4) WELDING & FABRICATION (5) PLUMBING (6) FITTING & MACINING (7) AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION (8) ELECTRONIC, PLUS 1, CURRICULM NOT YET COMPLETED (PANEL BEATING & SPRAY PAINTING)

  4. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM ULTIMATE AUTHORITY CEO, MCIL (Chair) CEO, SQA (Deputy Chair) Chairman, PSC Training Providers Member (NUS) President, Samoa Chamber of Commerce Employer s Representative Employees Representative (person who holds Samoa Apprenticeship Certificate) Apprenticeship Council

PATHWAYS INTO THE CURRENT APPRENTICSHIP STRUCTURE Completed minimum of 1 year vocational training (eg NUS, Punaoa, Don Bosco). accelerate through Program depending on prior learning. must meet admission requirements of approved training provider. Pre-Apprenticeship Training completed Year 12 and at least 1 year s work experience in chosen trade. must meet admission requirements of approved training provider Work Experience Training

  6. NEW APPRENTICESHIP STRUCTURE Program s duration is 3 years with flexibility on 1 or 2 trades NCSs for On the Job/ Practical Training is assessed by qualified Assessors. NCSs for Theory is assessed by NUS Competency Based instead of number of years. (depends on the capability of the learner)

PATHWAYS TO ENTER NEW APPRENTICESHIP STRUCTURE Year 1 (=SQA Level II) Accredited Pre-employment training at either with PSET provider or NUS OR Completed Year 12 and at least 1 year relevant work experience OR Council may decide different entry criteria to a different year in special cases to warrant submission Time in Apprenticeship Qualifications to be completed Samoa Off job training and assessment (NUS) On job training and assessment in the workplace (This is a notional not exact time as apprentices must complete all NCS of Qualifications) (practical and theory) (practical and theory) Currently 200 hours per year SQ Level lll Year 2 NCS Set 1 NCS Set 4 Year 3 NCS Set 2 NCS Set 5 Year 4 SQ Level lV NCS Set 3 NCS Set 6

  8. COMPLETION OF APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAM Workplace and formal Training completed National Competency Standards met Samoa Apprenticeship Certificate
