  1. Lesson 2 September 2020 LO: To understand how adult ceremonies compare to infant ones Recap - What coming of age celebrations did we discuss last lesson? Write what you remember on your whiteboards.

  2. What is a Baptism? Baptism is a ceremony that symbolises a commitment to living a life as a Christian. Jesus was baptised in the New Testament by John the Baptist. Holy water is put on baptised people by a church leader as a symbol of being cleansed and made ready for a new life for God. https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/religious-studies-ks2- baptism/zm32nrd Promises in a baptism are made to live a life dedicated to God. How are the promises similar and different at a child baptism to Bar Mitzvah? Promise to uphold Jewish and Christian values and live their life following the rules. Both faiths live their life following the 10 commandments.

  4. ANSWERS A Baptism can be celebrated at any age, even adults can get baptised, but a Bar Mitzvah is usually celebrated at 12 or 13. Both ceremonies symbolise living your life following the rules of the faith. A Baptism involves water, which symbolises cleansing your soul. There are readings from the Bible at the Baptism and readings from the Torah at a Bar Mitzvah.

  6. What choices do the children have at the Baptism do the children have free will? Free will is being able to choose between different actions The children have not decided to be baptised, whereas adults decide to be baptised and live their life according to Christian rules.

Explain that some Christians (e.g. Baptists and Pentecostals) believe baptism should only occur once somebody is an adult, as it is then that the individual can accept Christianity for themselves. This type of baptism is called believers baptism. It is done using total immersion, where the person being baptised walks down into a pool and is fully submerged three times before walking out into their new life. Talk partners: Discuss what a baptism for adults is using the keywords below. Write your best answer on a whiteboard. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE ALL THE WORDS. Key words: spirit purity souls promise laws responsibility free will choice A baptism for adults is a ceremony where souls are cleansed with water, signifying purity of souls. An adult makes a promise to live their life according to the Christian faith and rules. They have free will and therefore, responsible for their own actions.

  8. MAIN TASK: Task 1 - Explain the difference between a Bar Miztvah and Baptism. Also, the difference between Baptisms within the religion (use your knowledge about Believers Baptism) Task 2 - Explain the difference between a Baptism for adults and a Baptism for infants.
