Renewable Energy Division (RED) Set up in 2007 Project-based division Implementing arm of government with Renewable Energy (RE) and Energy Efficiency (EE) projects IMPRESS Project - Improving the Performance and Reliability of Renewable Energy Power Systems in Samoa 2017 2022 ( 5 years) GEF Funded 5 Components Technical Working Group (TWG) 5 - Enhancement of Awareness on the Application and Benefits of RE/EE Members SQA, MESC, APTC, NUS and USP Meet quarterly to update everyone on the progress of activities specific to Component 5
What is already in place? Completed Certificate I on CC and Sustainable Energy (funded under Pact VET Project) Signed an MOU with NUS to deliver Sustainable Energy Certificate II (funded under IMPRESS Project) Carry out awareness Campaigns for schools and some vocational training centers Sector Specific Capacity Building Training Programs such as Water and Sanitation Sector Trainings in collaboration with Oloamanu Center (NUS)
How are we sustaining partnerships? Regular communications through working groups meetings, annual events & workshops. Established local stakeholder advisory mechanisms e.g. Climate Change Sector Advisory Group (in-active), Samoa Biogas Association (new). Active engagement through tangible RE and EE project initiatives e.g. Solar Lights Program Implementation of cross sector projects e.g. IMPRESS Project, EWAAC Project, Water and Sanitation Sector programs
Way Forward To attract more RE and EE Projects and secure funds to ensure sustainability of current partnerships with local partners. Host seminars or awareness programs, workshops for PSET and Employers on specific skills sets needed in the RE and Energy industry. Encourage students and undergraduates to take up RE and EE as a major and profession. Active engagement and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure RE technologies and concepts are included in Curriculums, school programs (site visits for students)
