BSA BB-Gun Range Safety Briefing NO AMMUNITION in the classroom NO EXCEPTIONS! 1
Orientation Goal To provide beginning shooters with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to shoot a BB-gun safely under the direct supervision of a BSA BB-gun rangemaster, an NRA Certified Rifle Instructor or an NCS certified Shooting Sports Director. 2

Shooting Fundamentals Determining the Dominant Eye Extend arms forward and form opening between the hands With both eyes open, look at a distant object through opening Bring hands to face while looking at object Opening will be aligned with the dominant eye 5
Benchrest Position Feet flat on the ground with the legs relaxed. Seated directly behind the front support with slight lean forward. Butt of the BB-gun in the shoulder close to neck. Elbows on the table to support the BB-gun. Support hand under the forearm. Grasp the BB-gun grip with the other hand. Face firmly against the stock with eye looking straight down the sights. 6
Prone Position Lie on the ground facing the target with the ankles slightly left for a right-handed shooter. Slightly bend the right knee. Draw the right leg up, keeping it parallel to the back, and place the right foot on the ground. Extend the left elbow forward. Hold the forearm of the BB-gun in the left hand. Grasp the BB-gun grip with the right hand. Position the BB-gun butt against the right shoulder so the sights are at eye level. Place your cheek firmly against the stock so you are looking down the barrel. 7
Free-Arm Standing Position Stand with feet shoulder width apart and body weight evenly distributed. Keep the body and head comfortably erect. Keep the knees straight, but not locked. Support hand under the forearm of the BB-gun to support the weight of the BB- gun. Grasp the BB-gun grip with the other hand. Position the butt of the BB-gun firmly against your shoulder so the sights are at eye level. Place your cheek firmly against the stock so you are looking down the barrel. 8

Shooting Fundamentals Breath Control Body movement while breathing can produce gun movement that impairs shooting. Stop breathing momentarily while firing the shot! (Respiratory pause) 12
Shooting Fundamentals Hold Control Body movement affects the shot. Hold your body still. Hold control allows you to maintain the proper sight alignment and sight picture during the process of firing the shot. 13
Shooting Fundamentals Trigger Control Trigger is pulled straight to the rear in a smooth, continuous manner without disturbing the sight picture. Gradually and evenly increasing pressure until the mechanism releases. SURPRISE yourself when the gun shoots. 14
Shooting Fundamentals Follow-Through In BB-gun Shooting: Follow-through means to maintain aiming (perfect sight alignment and acceptable sight picture), breath control, hold control, and trigger control until the gun settles back into the aiming area after firing. 15

TRIGGER CONTROL 4. Moving only your trigger finger. 5. To maintain position, and continue aiming, breath control, hold control, and trigger control until the gun settles back into the aiming area after the shot is fired. FOLLOW-THROUGH 16

Range Safety Briefing Other Safety Rules Know your target and what is beyond Wear eye protection as appropriate Never use alcohol or drugs before or while shooting Be aware that certain types of guns and many shooting activities require additional safety precautions 19
Range Safety Briefing Range Commands Is the line ready? If the line is ready, shooters may pick up the BB- gun, load and commence firing. Stop Shooting. Clear all guns. 20
