What is Jump Start Kindergarten? Oregon Department of Education
Jump Start Kindergarten The purpose of Jump Start Kindergarten (JSK) program is to provide students and their families a smooth and successful transition from early childhood into kindergarten by setting the foundation for a positive school experience. The program is based on these equity-driven program components: Connection as the Foundation of Learning Co-Creation, Collaboration and Partnership Purposeful Outreach & Engagement 2 Oregon Department of Education
Goals & Objectives Student-Centered Goals for a seamless transition to: Create critical relationships that affirm a student s sense of belonging and connection to peers, adults, and school community, Increase student s social, emotional, and related skills in order to participate in a group setting and gain understanding of school routines, Cultivate a sense of joy, connection, and curiosity in the discovery of learning. Partnership-Centered Goals for a seamless transition for families to: Cultivate a strong sense of comfort and confidence in navigating the school environment and systems, Develop positive relationships between families and other families, school staff, and community partners, Cultivate positive attendance, routines, and meaningful connection to their child s educational experience, Experience aligned systems in partnership with Early Childhood Special Education programs, Early Learning Hubs, and Head Start programs. 3 Oregon Department of Education
Jump Start: Is/Is Not... Jump Start Kindergarten is A time to build meaningful relationships with families and embrace children's home language and culture* A time to provide students with small group opportunities to meet school staff and practice school routines Tailored by individual school teams Inclusive A time to engage children in playful and hands-on learning activities that promote movement, numeracy, and language development. Jump Start Kindergarten is not A time for formal academic measures A precursor to making class lists A one size fits all program A time for student worksheets and extensive seat time *Could be home visits, phone calls, video chats, porch visits, playground chats, etc... 4
Program Requirements Student-Centered Minimum of two weeks scheduled during the summer months when school is not in session. (Summer of 2022, 2023 and 2024) Minimum of 30 hours of total class time Important Note- The JSK program is intended to be a part of a broader kindergarten transition plan at the school that includes a variety of transition supports that begin during the year prior to Kindergarten. Culturally-sustaining, inclusive practices with an emerging evidence-base including, but not limited to: Build relationships and sense of belonging Social Emotional Skills Small motor activities School and classroom routines Free Exploration and Individual Choice Time Literacy and Numeracy Additional well-rounded activities such as art, song, dance and culturally affirming activities 5 Oregon Department of Education
Program Requirements Partner-Centered Minimum of 10 hours of family partnership activities. Strategies may include: Collaborative teams to strengthen parent/caregiver leadership, advocacy and oversee implementation of transitional practices, Family Orientation prior to start of program, Opportunities for families to visit upcoming kinder classrooms, family/teacher home visits, Additional culturally affirming family activities to encourage a meaningful connection to their child s school experience or other related resources. Culturally Sustaining Outreach for Enrollment Effective and culturally responsive outreach methods to ensure enrolled students represent at least the current demographics of the school s population with an emphasis on focal students groups. Partner with Early Learning Hubs to coordinate enrollment and outreach to families. 6 Oregon Department of Education
