Shelter Sector Technical Working Group Meeting - Focus on Environmental Considerations
The Shelter Sector Technical Working Group meeting discussed environmental considerations in program design, fire protection, waste management, energy needs, and supplies. Recommendations included reducing waste, managing packaging, considering energy sources, and planning for flood-related resources. The agenda covered introductions, environmental issues in shelter design, fire protection/prevention, and upcoming meetings. The group emphasized minimizing environmental impact through strategic planning and resource management.

Shelter Sector TWG: Environment 24 March 2023
NFI environmental considerations Reduce waste from providing minimal NFIs where not needed: a. E.g. through cash people may be able to recover items & cash allows for more selective in buying and avoiding waste Manage packaging: a. Reuse or repurpose packaging b. Collect unusable packaging when items are distributed c. Discourage burning of unusable packaging d. Avoid single use packaging for individual items e. It may be effective to package NFIs in a large reinforced plastic box (as used by ShelterBox) to provide storage for items when not in use, or pest-resistant food storage (can be provided separately, but using it to hold NFIs saves space in transport, and makes distribution easier.) Pallets: a. Plastic pallets may be an acceptable replacement for wooden pallets if there is a shortage, particularly if made from recycled plastic. Cardboard from packaging can be used as a sub-floor (fire risks should be assessed)
NFI environmental considerations Energy needs and supplies considerations: a. Further research recommended b. Use of diesel fuel needs a standard safety plan. c. Use of wood or other organic fuels requires a market survey (including consideration of source supply quality and quantity or established non- commercial supply system) and consideration of impacts on natural resources d. Caution re the provision of firewood for implications on deforestation e. What role will electricity play in providing energy? If shelters can be expected to be connected to electrical systems, this needs to be included in assistance provided with safety considerations addressed. Additional items to include: a. Items for food storage to reduce pests (The NFI scope: People have sufficient and appropriate items to prepare, eat and store food). b. Water collection and storage items: greater water storage reduces demand on women and girls c. Cleaning supplies? either as NFIs or in calculating cash package
Flood related resources In providing containers or RHUs, include plans on proper placement (e.g., foundation) and drainage RHUs can be modified to collect rainwater for non-potable requirements, reducing work demand and needs for water from other sources.
