Whenever an existing record must be changed for any reason, delete any occurrence of field 375. PCC Guiding Principles for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Metadata Creation (January 2023) 1. Describe resources in our collections with end users in mind, to facilitate access and promote discovery, while respecting the privacy and preferences of the associated agents of those resources. Work with user communities to understand their needs especially as they relate to DEI issues. Acknowledge that the standards and controlled vocabularies we use and their application are biased, approach their development and application critically, and advocate to make cataloging and resource description more inclusive. Take responsibility for our metadata and advocate for transparency in our cooperative and institutional practices and policies. Collaborate widely to support the creation, distribution, maintenance, and enrichment of equitable and inclusive metadata in various environments and jurisdictions. Guidelines for the Use of ISO 639-3 Language Codes in MARC Records (January 2023) A comprehensive list of nearly 8,000 three-letter codes for individual languages that expands on ISO 639-2. Code list at: https://iso639-3.sil.org/code_tables/639/data Authority record (377 Associated Language) When appropriate and when information is available, code languages in a 377 field using MARC language codes. Optionally, also code languages using the ISO 639-3 codes in a separate 377 field. Use second indicator 7 and $2 iso639-3. Report on Non-Latin Script Cross Reference Coding Practice in NACO (September 2022) PCC Standing Committee on Application (SCA) was asked to investigate any potential implication of abolishing the practice started in 2008 PCC SCA released its report in September 2022 that it surveyed ILS vendors that None of the respondents believe the abolishment of the practice would cause unintended flipping of non-Latin script access points in bibliographic records. Thus recommended to abolish the practice PCC SCS worked on a proposal for implementing the change considering two implementation scenarios Scenario 1: Abolish the special coding practice entirely and retroactively Scenario 2: Implement standard coding practice (008/29=a and omit 667) for newly established records and existing records that all references have been evaluated; retain 008/29=b for records that non-Latin references have not evaluated PCC SCS has asked CJK NACO Funnel to provide feedback, thanks to the Funnel members and CJK NACO catalogers from the Eastlib, I have submitted the collective feedback voting for scenario 2. Next step: Other non-Latin funnels also in favor of Scenario 2 and provided substantial feedback SCS will finalize the draft revision for DCM Z1, LC Guidelines, and NACO Participants Manual Planned timeline: provide the final draft to LC by May 15 in order for revision to be included in the August Update for DCM/LC Guideline SCS chair will share the final draft with the CJK NACO Funnel before submit to LC by May 15 CJK Funnel References Project coordinators and Oversight Committee members will review project documentations (Project guidelines, training PPTs, and FAQ) and plan for training for implementation accordingly 12
ALA-LC Romanization Table: Japanese Revised made in June 2022 The proposed revision will harmonize the Japanese Table with RDA and LC-PCC instructions; it will help greatly with the capitalization issues and with the complex division of words, which has always been a thorny dilemma for catalogers of Japanese materials. The revision will provide clear guidance with a great variety of examples of Japanese Romanization methods for catalogers and metadata specialists.
