  1. Thursday 11thFebruary 2021 Efficient homes Make a list of all the places in your home where electrical and heat energy might be wasted. STRETCH: Why do adults worry about wasting energy both in your home and around the world?

  2. Efficiency in the Home How could you make your home more efficient? Why is having an efficient home an advantage? You have 5 minutes

  3. All the energy used to heat a home is eventually transferred as thermal energy to the surroundings. The diagram, shows the percentage energy lost through different parts of the building. The higher the thermal conductivity, the quicker heat is transferred through the material. Houses are often built from brick, concrete, wood and glass. All have quite high thermal conductivity values. Insulation uses materials with low thermal conductivity, such as fibreglass in the loft, foam in wall cavities and trapped air in double glazing. Thermal insulation is often used to reduce unwanted energy transfers.

  4. State three ways we can save energy at home.

  5. Ways to reduce energy transfer There are some simple ways to reduce energy transfers from a house, including fitting: carpets and curtains reflective foil on the inside walls double glazing Double glazing involves having two panes of glass in the window instead of just one. There is air or an even better insulator such as argon gas between the two panes of glass. This reduces energy transfer by conduction. Energy loss through walls can be reduced using cavity wall insulation. This involves blowing insulating material into the gap between the outside wall and the inside wall to reduce conduction. Loft insulation works in a similar way

  6. Design a poster or to explain to families the best ways to save energy at home. Be creative, make it eye catching BUT also make it informative. You must include information about: Switching off lights Using insulation Double glazing Draught excluders Unplugging electrical items you are not using Sealing gaps around doors and windows Turning down heating Use LED bulbs Tell people what energy store they are saving (electrical or thermal) and

  7. State 3 ways we can save energy at home State 2 reasons we should save energy State 1 reason why some people might struggle to stop loss of heat at home.
