Designing a Problem-Based Learning Module for Sustainability Champion Program
Vice-chancellor mandates academic departments to integrate a sustainability-themed module. Your team is tasked with designing a 12-week module focusing on sustainability and transferable skills. Choose a scenario, incorporate technology, develop key skills, plan assessments, and address challenges for successful group work. Get ready for a 5-minute pitch to showcase your champion module.

DEVELOPING A PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING MODULE PRACTICAL GROUP WORK SESSION
THE BRIEF THE V-C AGAIN . . . Your vice-chancellor, after reviewing the Green League Tables, has determined that one, of a number of responses that they would like to see implemented, is for all academic departments to incorporate a sustainability themed champion module that is either within their degrees or offered as an elective. The v-c sees this module as being essentially a problem- based, student-centred module with students working in small teams developing a whole raft of graduate attributes / transferable skills along the way.
THE BRIEF CONTINUED . . . Your v-c understands that one-size-does-NOT-fit-all and so there are a number of design scenarios . . . but they ideally use technology supported learning. Your team has volunteered / been encouraged to be a PBL-sustainability / skills champion! You have already chosen one of the scenarios (next slide); map out a workable 12 week module meeting the key design criteria (see later). Your v-c requires a 5 min pitch of your champion module. 30 mins go, good luck!
THE SCENARIOS . . . Scenario 1: The NEW health-based module is for Level 5 students studying a health-related degree; the module will involve them working with communities and identifying how sustainability is relevant to their subject. Scenario 2: The NEW option module is open to ANY Level 4 or Level 5 students, with the overall aim of improving the University s compliance with ISO 14000+. Scenario 3: A NEW core module at Masters level, with the task of proposing a programme for improving the engagement of STAFF with the sustainability agenda, using a range of mechanisms and media. Scenario 4: A NEW credit-bearing module for semester 2 of Level 4, that will engage with the local community on sustainability projects; numbers expected to be around 100, as it is one of a small number of electives.
THE DESIGN CRITERIA . . . What would be the key problem theme of the module? How might you use technology to support the learning? What are the key needs / skills / attributes would the module try to develop? What might be an appropriate assessment package for the module? What would be the key delivery challenges? Outline any key challenges / obstacles How might you ensure successful group working?
THE FEEDBACK . . . Opportunities Challenges
