Comprehension questions for Chapter 8 How much have you understood? Remember to refer back to the text to find the answers to these questions. You can write your answers on any piece of paper at home, or discuss them with someone but your answers must be in full sentences. My answers are on the next slide. 1. What is a sun king, according to Grandad? 2. What is Passchendaele , which Dad says is the reason they don t go to church anymore? You will have to research this. 3. Why is it strange that Dad took Mum to the pub? 4. What is on the piece of paper that Lil finds in the suitcase? 5. Who might the boy be?
Here are the answers I would give the questions set. I have written my answer in blue and my explanation of how I know think this is in green. 1. What is a sun king, according to Grandad? A sun king is someone who thinks they are really important and likes to show off and impress people. Page 2. 2. What is Passchendaele , which Dad says is the reason they don t go to church anymore? You will have to research this. Passchendaele was one of the biggest battles during World War I, between July and November 1917. It was fought for control of a village names Passchendaele. It is believed that hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides were killed which is why I think that Lil s Dad no longer wants to go to church. Why is it strange that Dad took Mum to the pub? It is strange that Dad took Mum to the pub because women don t normally go there, just men. Page 10. 4. What is on the piece of paper that Lil finds in the suitcase? Lil finds a piece of paper which includes the details of a baby who was born. It says how much they weighed as well as when and where they were born. Page 13. 5. Who might the boy be? This is your thinking, a prediction I think it might be an older brother of Lil s, although the brother would now be 23 years old.
