Comprehension questions for Chapter 2 How much have you understood? Remember to refer back to the text to find the answers to these questions. You can write your answers on any piece of paper at home, or discuss them with someone but your answers must be in full sentences. My answers are on the next slide. 1. Why had Lilian s Grandad travelled all over the world? 2. Why does Lilian believe that Grandad s sickness is suspicious? 3. Why do you think Lil chose to hide the jar from her mum? Here are the answers I would give the questions set. I have written my answer in blue and my explanation of how I know think this is in green. 1. Why had Lilian s Grandad travelled all over the world? Lilian s grandad had travelled all over the world to buy copies of ancient objects to sell. Page 1. Relics are objects from historical times. Grandad didn t buy the real ones, he bought fake ones, like he saw lots of fake jars in Egypt. 2. Why does Lilian believe that Grandad s sickness is suspicious? Lilian believes Grandad s sickness is suspicious because malaria is an infectious disease which is mostly found in tropical regions of the world, not in London. Malaria is spread by mosquitos which are not as common in our country as in warmer ones with tropical climates. 3. Why do you think Lil chose to hide the jar from her mum? Do you think this was the right choice? Lil chose to hide the jar from her mum because she was already worried about Grandad and didn t need to be thinking about anything else. I think this was the right choice at the time but if Lil is worried about it (as she was when sleeping) she should talk to someone. Page 7 for the first part, my own thoughts for the second part. 4. How do people translate hieroglyphics? People translate hieroglyphics using the Rosetta Stone, which is a big grey slab covered in ancient writing. Page 9 you could do some more research about the Rosetta Stone too!
