It is the expectation of the Winston- Salem/Forsyth County Schools that all students graduate college or career ready by engaging in rigorous and relevant classwork and completing a four-year course of study that prepares them for college or work after high school. College and Career Ready
Future Ready Core Course of Study Course and Credit Requirements
4 English 4 math 4 social studies *3 science *1 PE/Health, Future-Ready Core Course of Study *6 electives 2 electives (electives must be any combination of Career Technical Education, Arts Education or World Language) *4 additional electives ( from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area) Total = 22 credits * Effective the 2022-2023 school year
Student course selections should be based on their postsecondary plans. Work Future-Ready Core Course of Study Military Community College Four-year College or University
English I, II, III, and IV required Future-Ready Core English Levels include regular, honors, Pre-AP, AP, and IB
Biology Earth/Environmental Future-Ready Core Science a Physical Science course (e.g. , Physical Science, Chemistry or Physics) (Levels include regular, honors, Pre-AP, AP, and IB)
World History Civics Literacy Future-Ready Core Social Studies American History Economics and Personal Finance (not offered as AP) (Levels include regular, honors, AP, and IB)
Four mathematics credits are required. NC Math 1, 2, and 3 and a fourth math course to be aligned with the student's after high school plans (e.g. college or work). Future-Ready Core Math Math 4, Math 4 HN, Discrete Math for Computer Science, Pre- Calculus HN, AP Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB & BC, AP Statistics Many options exist. Please talk to your teachers and counselors.
Future Ready Core Course of Study Elective Options
Students must complete six elective credits to satisfy WSFCS graduation requirements. 2 electives must be any combination of Career Technical Education, Arts Education or World Language and Electives 4 additional electives ( from CTE, JROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area) Two years of World Languages are recommended not required two years of World Languages are recommended (no longer required) for minimum UNC four-year university admission
Students may select from a range of courses in this area including Band, Chorus, Dance, Orchestra, Theater Arts, and Visual Arts. Levels are beginning, intermediate, proficient, and advanced Arts Education Students may receive honors credit up to four times per Arts area (e.g. proficient and advanced) *Rising 9thgraders typically must audition to receive honors credit in the 9thgrade
Students may select from a range of courses in this area including: Agriculture, Business, Family and Consumer Science, Health Science, Hospitality and Tourism, Information Technology, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Trade and Industrial. Career Technical Education CTE courses benefit all students Several courses offered at all high schools Magnet Schools may offer specialized CTE courses that are limited to their school or only a few schools Specialized one and two credit courses at the Career Center
World Language offerings include French, Latin, Spanish, German, American Sign. Chinese, and Japanese Students who have a passing grade in three years of World Languages in middle school World Languages Students are encouraged to continue in the World Languages sequence through graduation Students seeking to be competitive in highly selective college admissions are recommended to complete at least two units of a World Language.
Students interested in developing leadership skills may consider taking JROTC courses. Army JROTC or Aerospace Science (Air Force) Army JROTC is offered at Atkins, Carver, East, Glenn, Mt. Tabor, Parkland, Reynolds, Walkertown, and West. Aerospace Science (Air Force) is offered at North and Reagan.

End of Course Exams in NC Math 1, English II, Biology, and NC Math 3 Testing Expectations Complete assessments required by NCDPI including Pre-ACT (10thgrade), ACT (11thgrade), and Work Keys (12thgrade selected CTE students).
Students and parents should note that while 22 credits are required for graduation, students will have up to 32 credit opportunities. (Students may register for eight credits each school year) Credit Opportunities Students are encouraged to explore areas of interest or courses that will enhance their postsecondary plans.

Pre-AP features grade-level instruction intended to give all students the opportunity for growth. Pre-AP offers a focused framework, instructional support, model lessons, classroom assessments, and an optional final exam. What is Pre What is Pre- - AP? AP? Pre-AP focuses on skills that students will need to succeed in AP courses, college, and careers. Pre-AP is back-mapped from AP courses, with input from teachers in middle school, high school, and colleges.
Pre-AP is not an honors programits grade-level instruction that meets students where they are and prepares them with the skills necessary for AP courses. Teachers accomplish this by devoting more time to deeper analysis of fewer concepts. What Pre What Pre- -AP Is Not: Is Not: AP Pre-AP is not a curriculum. Although robust model lessons are provided, teachers have flexibility to design their own instruction based on the course framework. This is what allows us to integrate it into our English I Seminar course. Pre-AP does not have a mandatory final exam and does not provide college credit
