For centuries the Ukrainian people had been struggling for liberty and independence. At last on the 24th of August in 1991 the Verhovna Rada of Ukraine announced the formation of an independent Ukrainian state, and in December, 1991, a nation- wide referendum confirmed the wish of Ukrainian people for independence. Since then we are a sovereign nation with our own language, traditions, culture and mode of life.

THE GEOGRAPHICAL THE GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION OF UKRAINE POSITION OF UKRAINE Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Europe. It is situated in the Eastern Europe. It borders on Belarus, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Russia and Slovakia. In the south it is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. So it has very important ports. The territory of Ukraine is mainly flat, but the Carpathians and the Crimea mountains make up 5% of its area. The major rivers are the Dnieper, the Dniester, the Bug, the Donets and others. The Dnieper is the third longest river in Europe, which divides the country into left- bank and right-bank territories. There are many large cities in Ukraine, among them: Kyiv (the capital of Ukraine), Kharkiv (the first capital of Ukraine, and its second largest city), Donetsk (its coalmining centre), Dnipropetrovsk (an important metallurgical centre), Lviv (a scientific and cultural centre) and many others. THE SEA OF AZOV THE SEA OF AZOV The Sea of Azov is an inland sea, connected with the Black Sea by the Strait of Kerch. The Sea of Azov is entirely shallow, about 1 to 16 m in depth. The water is almost fresh, although the salinity level has increased over the past few decades due to the diversion of water from the rivers that flow into the sea for irrigation and other uses. Because the sea once had much of fish, the Turks called it Baluk Deniz( Fish Sea ), but increased salinity and chemical pollution have since caused a decline in the fish population. The sea is roughly triangular in shape, narrowing at the northeastern extremity to form the Gulf of Taganrog.
THE RIVERS The Dnieper, Europe s third largest river, flows through central Ukraine and forms the country s main river network. More than half of the country s rivers belong to this system. The Dnieper is Ukraine s longest river, measuring about 980 km in length within the country s borders. Other major rivers are the Dniester, the Bug, and the Southern Bug in the west, and the Donets in the east. The Danube forms part of Ukraine s border with Romania in the extreme southwest. Except for the Bug, which flows northward into the Wisla in Poland, all of Ukraine s major rivers flow southward and empty into the Black Sea or the Sea of Azov. Ukraine has more than 3,000 small lakes that cover about 3 percent of its territory.

THE CLIMATE OF UKRAINE The climate of Ukraine as well as of any other country is determined by the peculiarities of its geographical position. As Ukraine is situated in the south-east of Central Europe rather far from the Atlantic Ocean and close to the large continent of Asia, we have moderate continental climate. The characteristic feature of this climate is four seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn. We hardly ever have severe frosts in winter, but there are snowfalls everywhere except the south of the country. Spring is usually very late: we can admire the blossom and enjoy the warmth of the sun only since the end of April. Summer is often hot, with occasional showers and thunderstorms that break the heat and clear the air. The real autumn comes in October, bringing miserable cold weather with biting winds and constant rains. The mountains of Ukraine the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains belong to the Mediterranean climatic zone. That s why these regions have a different, rather warm climate that makes the Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains popular resorts and tourists destinations. PEOPLE OF UKRAINE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE With the population of 46 million people Ukraine is fifth in number among the European countries after Germany, France, Great Britain and Italy. 68% of the population is urban and only 32% of Ukrainians live in the country. The most densely populated are southern and eastern industrial areas: Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Lugansk, and south-western steppe and forest areas: Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Chernivtsi. Ukraine is a multinational country. Three thirds are Ukrainians. There are certain regional differences in their folk culture, life style and even language. 21% are Russians. Many Russian people live in the Crimea, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporizhzha. 6% are other nationalities. Belorussians, Polish, Hungarians, Rumanians live mainly in the western part of Ukraine; Jews, Moldavians and Tatars inhabit the south of the country.
