Empowering Women through IT Education in Ukraine amidst Humanitarian Crisis
In response to the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war in Ukraine, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) initiated a pilot project to provide IT education for vulnerable women, including widows, mothers, and those with special needs. The project aims to empower women by offering access to the competitive IT sector, enabling economic independence and reducing vulnerability. The digitization drive in Ukraine's economy highlights the significant contributions of the IT sector, with export revenues growing steadily. However, the ongoing conflict poses challenges to the labor market, impacting employment rates and increasing the number of unemployed individuals, particularly women.

IT Generation for Women War in Ukraine caused a humanitarian catastrophe, which was accompanied by the expansion of socially vulnerable segments of society, including women: widows, mothers with many children, as well as women with special needs. In accordance with its mission, DRC supports displaced person in becoming self-reliant. Simultaneously, DRC considers the needs of Gender-specific groups within the context of the escalation in violence. In this context, DRC launched a pilot project IT Education for Women
IT Generation for Women IT => internationally oriented and very competitive field; the most reliable and remote work; decent sources of earnings; enable smooth operations regardless of the locations of the employee; allows to keep earnings regardless of physical location; possible full- and part-time work, freelance. Women => help to become an economic independent actors in the labor market; give an access to steady income through self-employment (one option); reduce vulnerability to different forms of exploitation; improve gender balance in the Ukrainian labor market as a whole.
Digitization as a driving force in economic development Share of IT sector in Ukraine`s GDP is 4% (may grow to 10% in 2024) (State Statistics Service of Ukraine). The growth rate of the IT sector is estimated at 20-25%/year (Statista). In 2021 the volume of exports of IT services amounted to $6.9 bn (37% of exports of all services), which puts the sector in third place after agriculture and metallurgy (State Statistics Service of Ukraine). The level of taxes paid by the IT sector increase every year: in 2017 their number amounted to UAH 8.3 bn., while in 2021 UAH 23.5 bn, what is almost three time more (State Tax Service of Ukraine).

IT accounts (during January-September 2022) for almost half - 46% - of the total volume of service exports (Open data bot).

It is predicted that in 2023 the number of unemployed people will increase to 2.8 mln people. IT Education for Women Task: facilitation of education for internally displaced women in two in- demand IT professions. Financial support: the average size of the grant is USD 800. Final goal: estimated employment success rate stands at 60-70% among graduates of the program. First results: DRC conducted an open tender to find an ideal implementing partner; GoIT was selected as the most fitting one; 2560 applicantions were submitted from all over Ukraine; 130 women selected (FullStack and UI/UX Design); Studies are ongoing.
